California Budget Deficit Requires Balanced Approach

By Assemblymember Bob Blumenfield

SACRAMENTO – In this Democratic weekly radio address, Assemblymember Bob Blumenfield (D-San Fernando Valley) discusses the California budget deficit and Governor Jerry Brown’s recently revised budget proposal. Blumenfield, Chair of the Assembly Budget Committee, notes that a slow recovery and court decisions blocking previous cuts have contributed to the $16 billion deficit. Blumenfield also points to the need for Californians to pair new revenues with the cuts that must be made.

It’s Time to Think Big on Transit

By Assemblymember Bob Blumenfield
Chair of the Assembly Budget Committee

Traffic is killing us.  It eats up our time, it thins our wallets as our cars idly burn through expensive gasoline, and it spoils the air we breathe.  We need a path to real public transportation alternatives in order to get out of our cars and on with our lives.

That’s why I have authored legislation calling for a group of experts to develop California’s first statewide public transit development and financing plan.  And, ever mindful of our trying budget times, it will not cost our state’s besieged General Fund a dime.

On-Time, Comprehensive, Balanced Budget Protects Jobs and Economic Recovery

By Assemblymember Bob Blumenfield

SACRAMENTO – In this Democratic Weekly Radio Address, Assemblymember Bob Blumenfield (D-San Fernando Valley) Chair of the Assembly Budget Committee, discusses the comprehensive balanced budget package that Legislative Democrats passed this week. Blumenfield states that the budget makes the best out of a bad situation, including “permanent solutions which eliminate 75% of the state’s deficit projected for future budget years.” Blumenfield highlights the importance of enacting the budget in time for the start of the fiscal year, marking a big victory for “schools, local government and businesses that contract with the state.” Blumenfield notes that while the budget doesn’t call for a special election to give voters the choice on revenues, this budget continues the conversation—an important point because there is no responsible long-term solution to California’s long term budget challenges without revenues.

Last Call for Four Republicans

By Assemblymember Bob Blumenfield

Ever since Governor Jerry Brown unveiled his responsible approach to solving the state’s budget deficit back in January, my Democratic colleagues and I have given Republican legislators in the Assembly and Senate opportunity after opportunity to step up and be part of a bipartisan solution.

With the constitutional deadline for passing the budget coming up on Wednesday, time is officially running out for Republicans to do the right thing.

Back in March we offered the Republican legislators the chance to join us in making tough but necessary cuts and reducing the deficit by approximately $14 billion. Most Republican legislators refused to vote for those cuts, even though they vociferously support the concept of cuts.
