Governor-Elect Brown Don’t Quit on Our Kids

By Jake Steinfeld

As a young child, I was overweight, stuttered and wasn’t very confident.  But when I turned 14, I started lifting weights and it changed my life completely.  Working out helped build my confidence and self esteem and it sparked my “Don’t Quit” attitude, which allowed me to wrestle with, and eventually overcome my speech impediment.

When I became Chairman of the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports five years ago, my goal was to inspire California’s kids to get fit by developing a ‘Don’t Quit!’ attitude themselves.  Our call to action was for kids to take the Governor’s Fitness Challenge and be active for 30-60 minutes a day, 3 days a week for a month.  We went from having 10,000 student participants in the Governor’s Challenge in 2006 to more than 1.3 million participants in 2010, far surpassing similar programs in all other 49 states combined. Not since the Kennedy Administration have Americans been so inspired by a call to fitness.
