Weekly Radio Address: Federal Stimulus to Help California Move Forward
In this week’s Democratic weekly radio address, Assembly Speaker Karen Bass (D-Los Angeles) and Assemblymember Norma Torres (D-Ontario) highlight discussions taking place between California Democrats and Congress and the Obama Administration on how federal stimulus can help California lead a national economic recovery.

Hello, this is Assembly Speaker Karen Bass.
Like so many Americans, I am enormously proud to see Barack Obama become our 44th President of the United States.
Our new leadership in Washington will be crucial in guiding the country towards the change we need.
But besides a new direction for progress, there is also in Washington a growing understanding that California’s struggling economy is slowing the national economy as a whole.
This is why, while in Washington for the President’s inauguration, Senate President pro Tem Darrell Steinberg and I met with Congressional leaders to discuss how federal economic stimulus proposals moving through Congress this month can be geared to help California lead a national economic recovery.
Reflecting earlier talks with the President’s transition team, our focus was on how we can channel federal stimulus into job-creating infrastructure projects, particularly in energy and transportation fields as California helps forge the new green economy.
In addition to creating jobs, we must help a growing number of Californians for whom jobs can’t be created fast enough.
Recent House extension of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program is an encouraging sign as more parents lose employer-based coverage.
And discussions with Congress and the administration will continue to focus on California’s federal partnership on unemployment and health insurance.
Prominent in these discussions will be California’s federal Medicaid funding, which is consistently less than most other states and an expansion of food stamps for a growing number of families struggling to put food on the table.
Bringing in needed economic stimulus and support is not a substitute for the revenues we need to close our state budget gap.
Legislative Democrats will continue to put up real deep cuts with the expectation Republicans bring long overdue revenue solutions.
Ultimately there is only one way to move forward in such a challenging time; we must move forward together.

ASAMBLEISTA NORMA TORRES: EL PRESIDENTE OBAMA Y EL ESTIMULO ECONOMICO FEDERAL
En el discurso demócrata semanal, la asambleísta Norma Torres (D- Pomona) dice que ella como millones de estadounidenses, esta muy orgullosa de ver a Barack Obama convertirse en el presidente de los Estados Unidos. En el discurso radial la asambleísta agrego que este cambio de liderazgo en Washington es sumamente importante para guiar al país hacia los cambios que necesitamos. Y también añadió que el dialogo con los lideres del Congreso sobre como las propuestas de estimulo económico federal que actualmente estan considerando pueden ayudar a California a encabezar el mejoramiento de la economía nacional.
Hola, les habla la asambleísta Norma Torres.
Al igual que la mayoría de residentes de este país, estoy muy orgullosa al ver a Barack Obama convertirse en el presidente de los Estados Unidos.
Este cambio de liderazgo en Washington es sumamente importante para guiar al país hacia los cambios que necesitamos.
Pero aparte de una nueva dirección hacia el progreso, existe en Washington un mayor entendimiento que los problemas económicos de California repercuten en la economía nacional y mundial.
Por esta razón, en la visita a Washington durante la inauguración del presidente Obama, los lideres de la Legislatura estatal el presidente del senado Darrell Steinberg y la presidenta de la Asamblea Karen Bass se reunieron con lideres del Congreso para dialogar sobre cómo las propuestas de estimulo económico federal que actualmente están considerando pueden ayudar a California a encabezar el mejoramiento de la económica nacional.
Reflexionando sobre las conversaciones anteriores con el equipo del presidente, el enfoque a ambos fue en cómo se podrá canalizar el estimulo federal para crear empleos en los proyectos de infraestructura, particularmente en el campo de la energía y el transporte, al mismo tiempo que California forja una economía verde.
Aparte de crear trabajos, tenemos que ayudar a los californianos que no recibirán los beneficios de esos trabajos a tiempo.
La expansión del programa de seguro médico para niños por parte del Congreso federal es un buen primer paso ya que sigue aumentando el número de padres de familia que pierden sus seguros médicos al quedar desempleados.
Un punto central en esta discusión serán los fondos federales que recibe California para el programa Medicaid, ya que proporcionalmente recibimos menos que otros estados, otro punto será la expansión del programa de estampillas de comida para servir el aumento de familias en necesidad de alimento.
Los fondos federales que podramos atraer a California para estimular la economía no servirán para sustituir los fondos que necesitamos generar en el estado para solucionar nuestro déficit.
En la Legislatura estatal los líderes demócratas seguirán dispuestos a presentar grandes recortes al presupuesto estatal esperando que a su vez los republicanos por fin presenten soluciones que generen los fondos necesarios para complementar la solución al déficit.
Al final de cuenta la única manera de solucionar este gran problema es trabajando juntos.

man i wish they would tell me what is going on, becuase there is a big difference between spending and a stimulus, I wish somebody would Gimme $785 Billion

Wooho! Bhama bucks are coming to California. Shame that the Enviro's in the legislature will not allow ANY CEQA regulations to be waived or even shortened for all the projects that the Bhama bucks would or could fund. Therefore once the money arrives it will take THREE (3) years or longer for people to be put back to work with the funding! Congrats California! We continue to circle the drain and move further into third world status all in the name of the new religion: His Holy Greeness.
