Thanksgiving for Alyson Huber, the Newest Elected Member of the California Assembly

alyson_huber.gifBy Frank D. Russo

Although she trailed in the vote counting for three weeks, last minute votes have put her over the top. The voters of the 10th Assembly District in Amador, El Dorado, Sacramento, and San Joaquin Counties gave Democrat Alyson Huber something to celebrate late Monday when it became apparent that she was the winner.

This is a district that has been in Republican hands since its current configuration. Huber will replace Republican Alan Nakanishi in this 39% Democratic District where a late registration drive closed a once yawning deficit of Democratic registration to within a thousand or so votes of parity.

In this morning’s email traffic, there is this one from Huber, which answers the question of what you do when you win a race within a week of the swearing in session which takes place this Monday, December 1—not enough time to arrange for the traditional thank you party near the Capitol. Huber is having a joint celebration with newly elected Democrat Joan Buchanan who won the adjoining 15th Assembly District—also a switch from Republican hands. Here’s what Huber just sent out:

“First let me say - Happy Thanksgiving! If you haven't heard yet I have a wonderful holiday surprise for you - we won! After all of the ballots were counted we ended up ahead by 505 votes. Only El Dorado County is left to count and they have fewer than 300 ballots left countywide.

“When I started my campaign for State Assembly, many people said that this seat was not winnable. But growing up I had overcome tougher obstacles. So I committed myself to this campaign and with the help of so many dedicated supporters we prevailed. I want to thank my friends, campaign staff and volunteers, our supporters and especially my family for their sacrifice during this long campaign. Our state is obviously facing a severe economic crisis, but I look forward to facing these challenges and serving the constituents of the 10th Assembly District.

“I will be officially sworn in on Monday, December 1st at 11:45 p.m.

“After the ceremony, I will be joining Assemblymember elect Joan Buchanan for a joint reception.

“Looking forward to seeing you on Monday.”

Now that will be a party!
