One California Senate and Seven Assembly Races Close—Democrats May Gain a Few Seats

frankrusso-small.jpg By Frank D. Russo

Precinct votes are still being counted in some of these races and there are many vote by mail ballots that arrived on election day along with provisional ballots to be counted, but it appears Democrats have gained at least one and possibly six Assembly seats and have either held their own or added a state Senator.

Democrat Hannah-Beth Jackson has a tenuous lead of 386 votes over Republican Tony Strickland in the battle for the 19th Senate District seat vacated by Republican Tom McClintock with 98.3% of the vote counted. Since the remaining precincts to be counted are in the Ventura County portion of the district which Strickland won, this lead could switch or become narrower. It then will be up to the thousands of uncounted vote by mail or provisional ballots to decide this race.

It appears that Democrat Joan Buchanan has won the 15th Assembly District long held by Republicans over Abram Wilson, 52.9% to 47.1%--a lead of over 10,000 votes and the Associated Press declared her the winner. There are some more provisional and vote by mail ballots to be counted, but these should not affect this result.

In the 10th Assembly District, long in Republican hands, Democrat Alyson Huber trails Republican Jack Sieglock 46.2% to 47%--by a littleover a thousand votes with thousands of those pesky vote by mail and provisional ballots out there.

In the 26th Assembly District, another perennial Republican seat, Democrat John Eisenhut has in all probability lost this race to Republican bill Berryhill51.7% to 48.3% and trails by 3632 votes before the VBM’s and provisionals are counted.

It appears that Danny Gilmore in the 30th Assembly District may be the sole Republican to take any Assembly, Senate, or Congressional seat from California’s Democrats. Gilmore leads by 2095 votes, 27,803 to 25,708 for Democrat Fran Florez who ran for this open seat with 90,3% of the precinct votes counted.

With 96.6% of the precinct votes counted in the 37th AD, Democrat Ferial Masry has fallen short 48.5% to 51.5% in her bid to unseat Republican Audra Strickland . This is their third battle and unless the remaining 13 precincts or VBM and provisional ballots makes up a 3983 vote deficit, she has lost.

In the 78th AD, long a squeaker of a district, but held for three terms by the Republicans, Democrat Marty Block leads 54.9% to 45.1% over Republican John McCann with 70.8% of the votes counted. All of this district is within San Diego and it is not known which precincts are extant or the extent of provisional and late VBM ballots.

In the 80th Assembly District, held for some time by Republicans, Democrat Manuel Perez a 51.5% to 48.5% lead with 83.2% of the votes counted. This is a lead of 1613 votes. Most of the uncounted precinct votes are from the Riverside portion of his district which he won narrowly.

Lastly, there is another seat the Democrats could capture, the 36th Assembly District where Linda Jones trails Steve Knight 52.2% to 47.8%--by a little over 4,000 votes with 66.6% of the precinct votes counted.
