Charlie Brown Trails McClintock by Just 359 Votes and is Winning Provisional Ballots—Hope for Huber and Hannah-Beth Jackson--But Longer Odds

frankrusso-small.jpg By Frank D. Russo

The latest word from the Charlie Brown for Congress campaign is that Tom McClintock’s lead continues to narrow in California’s 4th Congressional District and is down to just 359 votes. Provisional ballots, even in some of the counties that voted for McClintock are reportedly breaking in Brown’s favor.

The Brown campaign sent out an email this afternoon stating:

“Earlier this week, our opponents arrogantly and falsely proclaimed "the fat lady hasn't begun singing yet, but she's on stage and wearing a McClintock button.

“As he watches his lead evaporate, McClintock knows this opera is far from over. And that singer has gone backstage to re-accessorize.”

Alyson Huber-Jack Sieglock Assembly Race

Randy Bayne, Chair of the Amador Democratic Party reported earlier that Alyson Huber “continues to trail Jack Sieglock in the counting of ballots in Assembly District 10. The gap has grown to 1,007 (84,314 [46.9%] for Sieglock to 83,307 [46.3%] for Huber).”

Others in Sacramento report that there are several thousand ballots remaining to be counted including many provisional ballots.

Bayne provides a little bit of history on surprising Democratic gains in the 10th Assembly District won in the last election by Republicans by an almost two to one margin: “Two years ago turn out was much lighter. Alan Nakanishi, this year’s termed out incumbent, received 84,455 (61.3%) votes — almost the identical number Sieglock received this year — and Jim Cook received only 46,858 (34.0%)."

Jackson-Strickland Update: Senate District 19

Democrats had hoped to take the 19th State Senatorial District away from Republicans. Tom McClintock, the candidate for the 4th Congressional District 400 miles to the north had represented this Santa Barbara, Ventura, and Los Angeles County seat and won comfortably in the last two races.

Yesterday Democrat Hannah-Beth Jackson’s campaign sent out this email:

“It has been over two weeks since Election Day, and it is hard to believe that we still do not know the results of our State Senate race.

We have been receiving periodic updates from Santa Barbara, Ventura and Los Angeles counties, and as we suspected, the numbers have been fluctuating up and down. We've been waiting for the provisional ballots to be counted, which occurs only after the Vote By Mail ballots are counted by each county.

In Santa Barbara, they have gotten to that point. So yesterday we received the very first tally of provisional ballots from Santa Barbara County and along with it some very encouraging news. Santa Barbara counted over 2,000 of their provisional ballots and we won them by over 65% giving us an additional 735 votes.

This means that we have gained on Strickland's lead and are now only trailing by 1,721 votes.

This deficit may seem like a lot but there are still over 3,000 provisional ballots in Santa Barbara to count and an estimated 14,000 provisional ballots in Ventura County, and these ballots should favor us.

The bottom line is we are still in the game here and have a good shot at winning. We always knew it was going to be a close race, and it will be close to the very end. We could very well see a little more up-and-down movement while LA and Ventura finish up their non-provisional vote count, so hang in there!

Thank you very much for all of your support and kind emails and phone calls. We all have to stay patient during this process. It's important that the counties take the time they need to accurately count the ballots. And know that we have dozens of election monitors working with the counties to observe the counting of ballots to ensure that this happens.

We will keep you posted in the days ahead as we get updates. In the meantime, we appreciate your patience, and wish you all very Happy Thanksgiving Holiday.”

In for the long count, but this analysis from Sara De la Guerra on the scene does not hold out much hope.

The deadline for counting ballots is December 2. but if any of these races is razor close, there may be recounts and court determinations which may go on even longer.

Stay tuned.
