Score One for Californians Opposing Prop 4
By Maggie Shandera Linden
State law mandates that every initiative that is going to appear on the ballot must have a legislative hearing sometime before election day. Earlier this week in Sacramento, Proposition 4 – "Sarah's Law" – or Parental Notification for the third time – was heard by a joint Assembly-Senate health committee.
In a packed hearing room, opponents, including Planned Parenthood, the California Medical Association, the California Teachers Association, and other organizations representing nearly one million Californians watched as Assemblymember Dave Jones pinned the initiative's author Katy Short to the wall, asking her question after question about the deceptive nature of Prop. 4. "Isn't it true there is no Sarah? Isn't it true she was a married woman? Isn't it true nothing in Prop 4 would have applied to Sarah?" Katy Short could do nothing but resort to slamming the California Legislature.
When the opponents of Prop. 4 took the field, a doctor who treats teenagers, a representative from the ACLU, and Planned Parenthood President Kathy Kneer, turned the discussion to the dangerous effect of Prop. 4 on California's teens and why voters should reject it for the third time. Following the scheduled testimony, when chair Assemblymember Mervyn Dymally asked for public comment, only a handful of supporters went to the microphone, whereas opponents lined up around the room, representing hundreds of coalition groups opposed to Prop. 4. It was no contest.
The good guys won, hands down. But one side note – an anti-choice fixture in the capitol, Albin Rhomberg, began to take individual pictures of opponents as they lined up at the microphone. This is something he has done for years to scare Pro-Choice activists. Chairman Dymally told him to sit down and stop taking photos…. But this is the kind of campaign from the proponent that we are all up against. For more info about how you can help defeat prop 4 and how to help, visit www.noonprop4.org.
You can watch the committee hearing on Proposition 4 from the California Channel archives for the month of September.

you aclu members are not in this for the benefit of the people. you're against religion, but yet you worship the mother-earth by wanting to save the enviroment, you promote homosexual marriages, they want equality, what's next the death penalty for anyone who opposes homosexuality, you promote abortions, you are the very reason why kids choose not go to their parents, for fear that something bad might happen to them. you pump fear into the public. you're in this fight for the degradation not the preservation of the human race. so what good can come out of such a radical movement? american civil liberties union....civil liberties for who? for people that have the same agenda as you?

I'm so glad someone is telling the truth about Prop 4! The truth is that most teens do go to their parents with this sensitive issue, but those that don't usually have a good reason. Is a scared, pregnant teen who fears abuse going to navigate an overcrowded court system and reveal the intimate details of her life to an unfamiliar judge? i think not...is she going to report her parents to law enforcement in order to notify her auntie? come on...
instead of getting the professional care and counseling she needs, she might turn to a shopvac, drano or worse yet, consider suicide.
this initiative is unrealistic, dangerous, and deceptive.
If the real goal of these proponents is to close the open, caring, respectful doors of Planned Parenthood - SHAME ON THEM! I applaud the work of caring providers like PP who work to improve communication between parents and teens and ensure that the REAL solutions to teen pregnancy are implemented - age-appropriate, comprehensive sex education.
NO ON PROP 4!! PROTECT THE HEALTH AND SAFETY OF OUR TEENS!

Proposition 4, a virtual carbon copy of Propositions 73 and 85, which California voters had the good senes to reject, is a striking example of the need for initiative reform. Why should anti-abortion activists try to eliminate fuindamental constitutional rights and threaten our teenagers' safety, year after year, simply becaues they have the money to qualify an initiative? Enough is enough. Thank you, Planned Parenthood, for leading this fight for a third year. You are heroic. I can't imagine a world without you.

calling planned parenthood heroic, is like calling charles manson heroic.life begins at the moment of conception. if you people don't want to get pregnant i suggest you you keep your legs closed or don't have sex at all. don't take it out on the baby it's not his/her fault that their parents were stupid!!!! you want to call someone a hero look at the soldiers in iraq, and afghanistan.i swear you people have really got your morals all screwed up! thank you for contributing to the demoralization of the U.S.

Thank you Planned Parenthood and thank you California voters for blocking this misguided initiative TWO other times. Prop 4 will be defeated. California knows it's about keeping teens safe. Voters see through this shady practice of lies and manipulation. "Sarah" doesn't even exist and nothing in Prop 4 would have even helped "Sarah" anyway. Shame on you Prop 4 supporters.

Whoever said that granting the freedom to terminate a pregnancy early is inflicting fear to society is very wrong! The fear comes from an ideal of a society in which people have no true expression of their feelings, thoughts, intentions, etc. As the youth we are expected to follow an ideal life that has been lived by our parents and grandparents, but has not resulted in the best for society. By neglecting to listen to your children, and by trying to convince them that having a child that they are not ready to be a parent to you are only creating bitter and fearful adults. The survival of the human species is not dependent upon us having more children... it is in our willingness to become conscious and alert beings... to let go of all fear instilled by religious leaders and by our ego!

Duh...
Didn't we say NO in 2005? Didn't we say NO again in 2006? Why are you wasting taxpayer time and money? Like I tell my kids... NOOOOOOOO!!!!! NO means NO.

After reading the comments posted above... parents need to know what's going on with their kids. If there is an ineffective line of communication going on then it's because we have laws like this that help it. I want to know why my daughter would be bleeding heavily if she got an abortion! This is my right as a parent to know what she is intending to do!
As for voting no on it... then you don't care to know what your daughter is doing behind your back. Politics and Media are quick to jump on the bandwagon and say "Oh it's deceptive!" Deceptive in letting parents know what is going on with their daughters? Are you high to say no? What the hell is wrong with you all? Teenager daughters aren't being protected if this fails you fools! It means that they can do whatever they want without their parents knowing about it! I'm voting yes.I don't care what you all think, my daugher is GOING to tell me so I can protect her. Oh... and it's not a state's job to protect a teenager. It's the parent. so stfu for all you who are saying no. you obivously are not caring about your own kids or don't have any girls.

Yes, clearly people who are against proposition 4 hate their children and don't care about them. Right?
Actually, I would say that people who are voting against prop 4 are doing so out of concern for OTHER young girls - say, the ones that would have to inform a really volatile or judgmental parent of their situation, and would have their safety, their well-being and their future put at risk. Forcing a girl to tell parents that might do anything to change her mind is not a way to open an effective line of communication.
And with regard to JESSE's statement, teen pregnancy is hardly a liberal problem. Maybe Bristol Palin should have taken your advice about keeping her legs shut.

The ACLC isn't against religion, they protect our civil liberties, which includes the right to practice whatever religion fulfills an individual. There is sufficient and excellent historical reference as to what happens when we do not separate church and state which is why our fore fathers insisted upon it when setting up the government. If you do a good job in educating and guiding your children, instilling good judgment, moral values and the ability to assess and make good decisions for themselves, you won't have to worry about what your daughter is doing behind your back.

If your idea of protecting your daughter is to 'force' her to tell you everything where is the respect?
I vote no against prop 4 because I am a young girl, and my parents who would vote the same way.
It is because some girls grow up in households with no love. They are scared of their parents. Where do they find love? From the boy at school. We all know this is a bad way to get love, but that's because we grew up with decent parents. Those who grew up with bad parents, don't. So why should she suffer abuse/violence for a bad decision?
As for keeping your legs closed- half the women who have abortions are married. That thinking to only have sex when you want to have children is so old and outdated. Catch up with the 21 century- or even the 20th century!

"Morality is simply the attitude we adopt towards people we personally dislike" ---Oscar Wilde
Proponents of prop 4 citing "morality" as the reason why prop 4 should pass are ignorant, plain and simple. Stop trying, haven't we said no to your ridiculous attempts to curtail abortion practice enough times already? It's about time you concede defeat and skulk off with your tail between your legs. We are tired of voting on the same issue over and over. We said NO. Deal with it.

I am in favor of prop 4. Believe me, I dont hate teenage girls or think they are stupid. There are good people on both sides of the argument that are trying to do what is best for American women.
My problem with abortion is this: all american humans fall under the constituiton, so human life equals rights. Therefore, my question for pro choice advocates is: when does human life begin? Does cutting an umbilical cord really turn a blob of tissue into a human? Doesn't it happen sometime before that? If so, tell me when.
See what I mean? If you what me to side with pro choice, I need to know when human life begins and why that is a logical starting point. Because it doesn't make sense to me that traveling through a birth canal and cutting a cord suddenly turns a blob of tissue, an option, into a true human life.
