Reaction to Breaking News: Schwarzenegger Plans to Slash Pay for 200,000 State Workers to Federal Minimum Wage During Budget Standoff
By David Dayen
d-day
[Editor’s note: This news comes a day after the Governor announced a slew of appointments, many of them with six figure salaries and two days after the appointment of 30 judges with six figure salaries. It is unclear without further research whether these new hires will also be paid the minimum wage, but the irony is unmistakable.]
The latest as we slog through the dog days of the budget summer, from the Sac Bee:
“Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger plans to sign an executive order next week that will reduce pay for more than 200,000 state workers to the federal minimum wage of $6.55 per hour to preserve cash in the midst of a month-long budget standoff, according to a draft copy of the order obtained by The Bee.
“Administration officials said the governor expects to take the action Monday.
“"The administration is looking into many different options to preserve cash to ensure we have enough to cover our costs," Schwarzenegger communications director Matt David said.”
Really, that's disgusting. Balancing the budget on the backs of the working poor is intolerable. I recognize that Republicans have no intention of doing anything but cutting services to deal with this problem. But this goes even further - cutting salaries in the midst of a budget crisis, along with putrid economic indicators and rising prices everywhere. Because of the total failure of leadership, we get failed solutions, like raiding local government and transportation funds, to put a band-aid on a persistent structural deficit. And now this. It doesn't stop with cutting salaries, either:
“The order would require state agencies to stop authorizing overtime for most employees.
“The governor also plans to issue a hard hiring freeze except for state jobs "directly related to the preservation and protection of human life and safety." He also will suspend work for all retired annuitants, permanent intermittent employees, seasonal employees, temporary help workers, student assistants and some contractors.”
What's so sick here is that Schwarzenegger would only create a pool of about 200,000 workers who would require additional government assistance, assistance that the state cannot currently afford. This is Shock Doctrine stuff. And it's totally unacceptable.
The lawsuits should begin tomorrow. This is a breach of trust. And if you think Arnold's poll numbers were bad before, wait until you see them after this stunt. 200,000 workers have a lot of friends and family.

CA must make some tough cuts. Its to bad it has to be these workers. Start by cutting the CA Senators they make 170K a year.
Mayor Gavin Newsom another CA resident tax payer was just gunned down in your city. As a direct result of your policy on sanctuary city for Illegal Immigrants. We could be next please convey your outrage to the Mayor.

Another leftwing nut case article. Plenty of criticism but not objective suggestions. It's the old "we want you to fix all the problems but just don't change anything" and "if you can't do that we will vote you out of town like the last guy" Jez give me a break California, you guys want a socialist utopia but can't even get your own house in order. Guess who is going to be paying for all your welfare crap when you go running to Suger Daddy Fed. ME!, Get real......

Ok guys, this story repeats year after year, and the only way to NOT be in this situation is to GET RID of enough of those rotten Republicans who have stuck their heels in and refuse to allow the state to function properly.
The present Field Poll is showing about a 30+ point lead of Obama over McSame. If that comes anywhere near holding that level in November, we COULD be winning any number of the closer districts IF the resources of the party would be DIRECTED TOWARD THEM!!!
One of these winnable ones close to LA is the 37th AD in Thousand Oaks/Simi/Moorpark/Filmore currently represented by Audra Strickland, whose husband Tom (now running against our wonderful Hannah Beth for the State Senate in the 19th SD)transferred HIS campaign funds to the little wife and bought her way into office.
Betcha can't name one positive thing she's done for the district!!! Many say she's hardly ever there, but stays in Sacramento most of the time. Those of you in the neighborhood can work on verifying that.
Ferial Masry, the Democratic winner with 65% of the vote, knows the district because she WALKS the precincts and meets people face to face. She's built her contituency over the last 2 races and is poised to TAKE THIS DISTRICT to the Democratic column IF she gets the help and support she needs to win. So, what about it CDP? Want a winner? Want a REAL MAJORITY? Then stop fiddling around and COME INTO these marginal districts and wipe out these obstructionist Republicans. Send them packing.

Actually it is the first thing he has done to shake up the budget negotiations. I am just curious as to who is going to get the cut? Hopefully it will include legislators and their staff, throw in all the managers and directors of state agencies and all political appointees and we may be on to something. How about his anyone on the state payroll making over $80,000 a year!

Thank you very much Clay for your understanding and sympathy of state workers and their families. My Father is a state worker.. has been for many years. He works hard and he does a damn good job for the State. No my family isn't rich and NO we aren't immigrants.. we are hard working American families trying to get by. No I won't be asking you for a handout when my Fathers pay goes from $40 an hour to $6.55 even though it is not his fault our state is majorly fucking up on our budget.

Lis I sympathize for your father and your family. I do not dislike California or Californians. I do have a problem with what seems to be a majority of liberal Californians who do NOT understand basic economics. Here it is. To increase your standard of living you must increase income. You can also decrease expendatures which will give you more money to work with. In California however people want to invite every illegal alien in the country to come to California where they're "undocumented status" is no problem and hey lets get universal health care for everyone in the state, documented or not. Well thats fine if you can afford it but you can't. However if you increase your income maybe you could. First however California wants new businesses but only if they are "Greenies" and lets sock some high taxes on the ones we got since they have the privledge of being in "California", they would never leave us now would they? Lets see, don't want to kick out the freeloaders but don't want any "dirty ol businesses" in. From afar I'd say your economics suck. Now your Gov. has to do something because the ship is sinking. This may have been the only thing he could do to stop the bleeding. Well guess what it's not bad economics it's a stupid Gov., yea lets blame him and all feel better. Thats the picture as I see it and as for your father, I hope California can get a budget soon that gets him and all state workers back to full pay.
