Immigrant Bashing Trumps Fiscal Responsibility for California Republicans
By Robert Cruickshank
Mimi Walters appears to be running one of the wingnuttiest campaigns in California history in her bid to get elected to the State Senate. Last week we told you of her proud affiliation with the Howard Jarvis Association at the expense of California schools. Now she is touting her anti-immigrant credentials, even at the cost of fiscal responsibility on the state budget.
Republicans who have made immigration a campaign centerpiece have fared pretty poorly at the ballot box. So while that might suggest silence while California Republicans prepare another immigration-focused campaign, my respect for common sense and human rights forces me to speak up.
Mimi has sent out two pieces of mail to her constituents in recent days playing up her anti-immigrant stance. In a glossy mailer she not only lists her support for various immigrant-bashing measures such as cutting off social services and forbidding something like the DREAM Act - but she also engages in an overtly racist attack on Latinos.
The mailer includes an image from the 2006 immigrant rights' protests of a Latino holding a sign reading - in English - "Today March, Tomorrow Vote." The caption to the photo reads "Illegal aliens are demanding more and more rights. Even the right to vote in our elections!" even though there's no evidence to suggest the protester was an undocumented immigrant.
The other piece of mail was a letter claiming that "it has been estimated illegal aliens cost California taxpayers $10 billion every year." Not only does she provide no supporting evidence for this extraordinary claim, it flies in the face of evidence to the contrary. Undocumented immigrants contribute at least $9 billion to Social Security, and they also pay numerous state and local taxes, such as sales taxes, gas taxes, excise taxes, and (indirectly) property taxes.
The irony of Mimi Walters' immigrant-bashing plan is that it seeks to drive taxpaying Californians either underground or out of the state entirely, right at the moment when we need all the tax revenue we can get. It's an inhuman, reckless plan, but then what else can one expect from one of the most far-right members of the Yacht Party?

The Republicans are playing POLITICS ON PEOPLES LIFE'S WITH UNFOUNDED FACTS AND FOLLIES LISTEN TO THEM AND FOLLOW THEM.
I AM NOT SAYING DON'T CLOSE THE BORDER, I AM SAYING THAT ALL HUMANS ARE CREATED BY ALMIGHTY GOD AND ARE EQUAL IN GODS VISION.
Robert you hit the nail right on the head,
They're scapegoating these poor food pickers to deflect their own incompetence.

Robert Cruickshank is a bald-faced liar, quite frankly, since he's claiming that Mimi Walters is attacking 'immigrants.' Look, you nitwit, she's attacking illegal aliens. Criminals. That changes the entire meaning of your rant, que no? Illegals need to be rounded up like cattle and deported forthwith.
Sheesh, you radical lefty nuts are all alike.

Robert, I am going to be as nice to you as I possibly can.
"In a glossy mailer she not only lists her support for various immigrant-bashing measures such as cutting off social services and forbidding something like the DREAM Act"
They are NOT immigrant bashing measures. They are ILLEGAL-immigrant bashing measures. I know you may say it's the same difference, but it's a very big difference. Legal immigrants have been willing to stand in line, do everything that has been asked of them and go through the legal channels in order to see their children grow and prosper as Americans. Illegal immigration is a slap in the face to everyone who's done it the right way
The bigger question remains: when we are having such a problem affording basic necessities as a state, why are we spending money on those who aren't even allowed to be here
"but she also engages in an overtly racist attack on Latinos."
I'd have to see that. One thing I've noticed is the race card gets pulled too impulsively these days.
"The mailer includes an image from the 2006 immigrant rights' protests of a Latino holding a sign reading - in English - "Today March, Tomorrow Vote." What else could the person be advocating for? Not for rights of Latino citizens, because they already have those rights.
And while undocumented is technically correct, the term is meant to distract attention from what entering this country undocumented is: ILLEGAL. Undocumented isn't legitimate immigration, but the framing used is meant to imply it is

She is saying the STATE spends $10 billion on illegal immigrants annually, and I don't know for sure, but I highly doubt they pay $10 billion or more in taxes.
"The irony of Mimi Walters' immigrant-bashing plan is that it seeks to drive taxpaying Californians"
OK NOW YOU'VE REALLY LOST ME. ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS ARE NOT CALIFORNIANS. I KNOW THIS MAY BE A WEIRD CONCEPT TO YOU, BUT ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS ARE NOT CITIZENS! YOU MAY BELIEVE THAT ANYONE, ANYWHERE HAS A RIGHT TO COME TO AMERICA EVEN FLYING IN THE FACE OF THE LAW, BUT THAT'S NOT THE CASE. THEY ARE ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS, NOT CALIFORNIANS, PLAIN AND SIMPLE
"either underground or out of the state entirely, right at the moment when we need all the tax revenue we can get."
NOW I'VE REALLY FIGURED YOU OUT. YOU HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO CONCEPT OF THE RULE OF LAW. AS EVIDENCE BOTH BY YOUR CONDEMNING OF SCHWARZENEGGER FOR REPEALING THE ILLEGAL CAR TAX INCREASE, AND YOUR WANTING REVENUE FROM ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS, IT'S CLEAR YOU BELIEVE YOUR ENDS JUSTIFY ANY MEANS, EVEN LAWBREAKING.
YOU'RE A POLITICAL SCIENCE TEACHER. ONE OF AMERICA'S FOUNDING PRINCIPLES IS THE RULE OF LAW. DO YOU NOT UNDERSTAND THAT?
"It's an inhuman, reckless plan, but then what else can one expect from one of the most far-right members of the Yacht Party?"
I'm no Republican, and I think your arguments are bullshit

"educated at UC Berkeley" or indoctinated at UC Berkeley?

Mimi Walter is finally starting to get it. ILLEGAL-immigrants are hurting inner city Americans. It is their hospitals that are closing, their streets that are being run by mexican gangs, their children that are dying. Glad to see inner city people seeing they are the ones losing ground everyday. Illegal's cut in line and are stealing money that should be used for education and healthcare.

The article author opines here:
"The mailer includes an image from the 2006 immigrant rights' protests of a Latino holding a sign reading - in English - "Today March, Tomorrow Vote." The caption to the photo reads "Illegal aliens are demanding more and more rights. Even the right to vote in our elections!" even though there's no evidence to suggest the protester was an undocumented immigrant."
No evidence the protester was an undocumented (illegal?) immigrant?
Them what is YOUR evidence the protestor is a LATINO and not a Pacific-Asian Islander or yet another ethnicity? Did you ask the person or are you merely racial profiling?
I thought those on the left were against racial profiling? Yet those who post articles on this site do it routinely.

Bashing legal immigrants is wrong! But having politicians and writers with misplaced compassion and self-righteous attitudes dictating that it's ok for law-abiding taxpayers to pay for people who jump our border and steal social services money from the needy in our country is wrong.
If you, the taxpayer, agree with these whackjob politicians and writers, you deserve all the gut-wrenching tax increases coming your way. These spenders enjoy spending your money to make themselves feel good. Meanwhile, every tax increase and amnesty proposal generates less and less respect for the law and the politicians who make the laws.
