California College Students Plan Day of Action on Budget Cuts

The leadership of the Student Senate for California Community Colleges (SSCCC), California State Student Association (CSSA) and University of California Student Association (UCSA) have come together in a historic coalition, called Students for California’s Future and announced that Monday, April 21, 2008 will be a Day of Action across California with major marches being planned at the State Capitol and downtown Los Angeles.

Over 3.2 million students at the California Community Colleges (CCC), California State University (CSU) and University of California (UC) systems are represented with the unification of these organizations because all would be adversely affected by $1 billion dollars in cuts to higher education.

The CCC system provides accessible higher education for all Californians, the CSU system has demonstrated its economic worth by proving that every dollar invested by the state directly generates $4.41 in return, and the UC system secures $6 in federal and private research dollars for every $1 towards state research funding. The Coalition believes it requires combined strength from all to create the stronghold of educational preparation and inspiration for entrepreneurship that California boasts.

This is why CSSA has come together with UCSA and SSCCC to institute a statewide day of action on April 21, 2008 to be marked with calls to legislators, marches, and rallies, It is the day no student should be silent in the face of $5.3 billion dollars in cuts to education.

Our generation has yet to see another issue with the power to singlehandedly affect multitudes of Californians the way these budget cuts could so now is the time to put aside differences, come together, and ensure a better, brighter future for all”.

We invite every Californian to join the students in reclaiming the promise of California’s future by joining the coalition’s effort.

The mission of Students for California's Future is to strengthen the student voice and presence at the electronic, campus, legislative district, governing board and state level; increase public awareness about the negative impact past budgets and the proposed 2008 budget will have on students; and champion the need for the state to increase investment in education.

Dina Cervantes is the Chair of the California State Student Association, a non-profit advocacy organization representing 450,000 students in the California State University system. In addition to her role as a student leader, Dina is enrolled at CSU Northridge where she is working on a Double Bachelor’s Degree in Family and Consumer Sciences and Child Adolescent Development. Following her service to the people of California, Dina plans to do advocacy work on behalf of children, families, and student in higher education.

It seems to me everyone forgets how the budget process works. Student, teacher, parents, grandparents can demonstrate as much as they want but in the end it will not make a differences. At the end, California senate and congress and governor have to agree on a budget. Republicans have enough votes to block any budget they do not like. As such, we will have cuts to k-12. We will have cuts to university and junior colleges and their is nothing this students can do about it. This is nothing more then feel good about your action. Understand that budget this year, like almost every other year will not be passed on time. It will likely not get passed till beginning September and if all of this people that are demonstrating think that politicians will remember their protest, well they are kidding them self.

Fortunately some people have hope that things will change, and are proactive enough to make things change. I really hope California gets some more money for education, and "this people" that are protesting really aren't "kidding themself."

You can stop it by doing something drastic such as stop attending college for a few months, boycott gas, march all the way to sacramento. I dont just ideas! What happened to the day were people marched , stopped being afraid and hopeless. A hopeless spirit doesnt get us anywhere. We have the right to be heard, after all they were elected by us and in order for them to pass an action we have to be in accordance. Dont be afraid, stop being pessimistic and demand your rights!

The group of individuals that this is directly effecting, Generation X, has got to re-evaluate their self interests. And if Obama getting elected and these horrific budget cuts aren't enough to get the MTV A.D.D generation off their asses, then we will have failed in every progressive and intellectual way possible. We have to live up to the expectations of our revolutionary predecessors and think a little more critically.
