The Republican Promise: Depression, Endless War, Tax Cuts for the Rich, Despoliation of the Environment to Benefit Texas Oil Companies…Have I Missed Anything?

towashington 089.gif By Bill Cavala
A veteran of over 30 years in Sacramento

John McCain has an enviable record to defend. He must begin by convincing voters that what did not happen should be credited to the Bush Administration. We did not have a recession (until now). We did not allow Saddam to produce weapons of mass destruction. We did not allow Iraq to become a radical Shiite state (so far). We did not allow an asteroid to destroy the earth. And so on.

But we did go to war on the basis of either a lie or faulty intelligence. We are now engaged in an endlessly expensive effort to stabilize a regime in Iraq (only to discover that oil revenues from that nation are being diverted to “non Iraqi banks” – Switzerland, perhaps? A war which McCain and the GOP embrace. Do they really think the fact that fewer Americans die each month will justify continued expenditure of trillions there while Americans suffer inflation and unemployment because of this waste of treasure?

Evidently they do.

Do they really think American seniors will forget the effort to ditch social security or the prescription drug fiasco? Does the GOP hope to recoup their losses here by nominating another old man?

Evidently they do.

As unemployment rises each month and the predatory lending practices of mortgage brokers produces record numbers of home foreclosures with an accompanying loss of life savings for neighbors as their home values plummet, does the Republican Party still insist the road to prosperity must be paved with tax cuts for the rich (that will trickle down to the rest of us)?

Evidently they do.

As science tells us that global warming is indeed real and our environment under serious assault by carbon based fuels, the GOP finds scientists-for-pay to argue against the facts (Big tobacco’s strategy). Meanwhile, worried oil companies jack up gasoline prices to $4-5 a gallon, exacerbating our economic recession. Does the GOP really believe voters will ignore these facts?

They might have – until the Congressional Seat of former Republican Speaker Hastert fell to the Democrats last week.

The truth is the Republicans are looking disaster in the face. A loss, not only of the Presidency, but also in the House and Senate of monumental proportions. A loss so great that political recovery will be years in the coming. A loss that will move the Country into a progressive period that ultimately will allow the people to reclaim even the Federal Court system.

Happy Days are here again.

Bill Cavala was Deputy Director of the Assembly Speaker’s Office of Member Services where he worked for over 30 years.

He attended undergraduate and graduate school in the 1960’s and received a doctorate in political science at UC Berkeley. He taught political science at UC Berkeley during the 1970's while he worked part-time for the State Assembly.

Cavala left teaching at UC Berkeley and went to work for Assembly Speaker Willie Brown in 1981 until his tenure as Speaker ended in 1995, and he has worked for his five successors as Speaker up to and including Speaker Fabian Nunez.

Comrade Cavala,

Your propaganda skills are well displayed! Congrats!

But consider:

Recall how in 2000 the dems were upset that the popular vote was not a factor in Bush vs Gore? The outrage still lingers...

But then explain why the democrats in Florida and Michigan were NOT allowed to participate in the presidential primaries...

And then...

Why does one of the candidates now want to change the rules and sit those states delegates to their own individual advantage?

And then...

Why does the democratic party have "super-delagates" who are NOT BEHOLDEN TO THE POPULAR VOTE but only to political insiders?

Not even the "evil" republicans have "super-delegates"...

Your elitist socialism has hijacked the democratic party from its own rank and file members similar to how Al Queda has hijacked a religion. It is time for the sheep in the democratic party to take their party back from elitists doing terrible acts in their names.
