The List of Names: California Super Delegates to the 2008 National Democratic Convention

frankrusso-small.jpg By Frank D. Russo

Their names have been known to the media who are trying to keep tabs on their leanings for Clinton or Obama, but not known to most Californians, even those who take their politics seriously. Here is the list of “Super Delegates” to the 2008 convention that will nominate the Democratic candidates for President and Vice-President, adopt a party platform, and make other decisions regarding future rules and practices of the party.

California, the largest state and largest delegation to the Convention has Super Delegates based on the following:

33 Democratic National Committee (DNC) Members, 31 Congressional Members, plus the vacant Tom Lantos seat which should be filled prior to the convention, and 1 former DNC Chair, Charles Manatt. Actually, there are 35 Democrats in Congress (33 House & the vacant Lantos seat, plus Senator Boxer and Senator Feinstein) but four of our Congressional Members are also on the DNC and therefore are counted as DNC Members.

WHY I CHOSE HILLARY CLINTON

For many years now I have worked in the women's movement and in the Democratic party to bring equal rights to women. I was among the first group of women in the Episcopal Church to cry out for women to be ordained. Now I am crying out for a woman to become president.

That Hillary Rodham Clinton is a woman is still less significant than the fact that she is committed to every cause which she espouses. Due to her experience, I believe that she will begin on DAY ONE to fulfill every task which she has promised us that she will fulfill. I, for one, truly believe that her words are not the hollow words of some of the other candidates; but rather that her words will become her deeds, because of her sincere dedication to rebuild this country.

For these reasons, I urge every one of you to carefully consider your vote for president at this year's convention. Hopefully, you will choose a woman with the experience, the devotion, the ability to make changes over and above a charming young man with many words and far fewer deeds to his name.

Why I will NOT vote for HILLARY:

1. Hillary R. Clinton displays multiple personality characteristics. Even the media says they're are not sure which Hillary will show up.
2. I have had it with her negative, nasty politics as usual tactics. Her underhanded attack ads are not helping the American People.

3. Her "I am a fighter" slogan scares me. She voted for the war! God help us if she answered the phone at 3am in a bad mood. Ouch!

4. People all around the world are rooting for Obama. He is a uniter she is a divider. We dont need anymore division in this country. This country has been divided long enough!

Regarding your comments:
I was among the first group of women in the Episcopal Church to cry out for women to be ordained." I recommend that you read 1 Corinthians 13:34

As for me, I feel that:
1. If California's "elected" super delegates do not vote for the candidate with the most popular vote they will not receive a "re-election vote from me.
2. If Hillary Clinton makes it on the ticket, even as Vice President, the I will be voting for McCain.

I would like to share with you that I am now a supporter of Barack Obama. What has shocked me, is that my husband, who is a republican, now plans to vote for him, as does his mother - 94 yrs. old and has never voted for a democrat! His honest, heart felt, candid and seemingly tireless advocacy for logical conclusions to solving difficult problems has a way of bringing all people together in a way I don't think Hillary Clinton can. As much as I admire her, and think her husband would be a wonderful asset, I think Barack Obama is the current person for the job.

I am 50 years old and a life time democrat. At the onset of this democratic primary race I would have been happy with either Clinton or Obama winning the democratic ticket. But over the last couple of months, it has become clear to me that Hillary Clinton is desperately trying to win the democratic nomination at any cost. Her sense of entitlement angers me. Hillary and her team have used fear tactics to try to get our votes. They have questioned Obama’s patriotism to try to get our votes, and most significantly she has aligned herself with the Republican candidate, John McCain, in the matters of life experience and love for our country to try to get our votes. I believe, if she is allowed to continue down this road, her divisiveness will threaten to weaken the Democratic Party and strengthen the Republican Party.

Bottom line, I have lost a lot of respect for Hillary Clinton. If she gets the democratic nomination I don’t think I can vote for her in the general election. I believe we as a country would be very fortunate to have Barack Obama as our next president. Please, please, I urge you to give your vote to Barack Obama.

WOMEN and MEN TOO: READ the speech that Senator Hillary Clinton gave on December 15, 2003 before the Foreign Relations Council in New York City.
She had recently returned from a Foreign Relations
trip. She was commended on having an astute analysis of what was happening in Afghanistan and Iraq. It was the day after Saddam Hussein had been captured. She represented US with dignity and expressed genuine concern for all, especially WOMEN. She is a brilliant WOMAN and will WIN in NOVEMBER. Don't let the Journalists who have become Tabloid Henchmen make your decision. Hillary is a proven fighter. She will turn US in the Right Direction, and has the Solutions.

I don't remember what I did in 1996. Maybe I was in a tense situation with my daughter by my side. We crossed the street, I remember a car nearly hitting us or was there no traffic? Get it? That trip was historical. Great for US.

Republicans won't shoot bullets at OUR CANDIDATE they will throw grenades. HILLARY CLINTON has the experience to throw them back. She cares, is brilliant, experienced, and through her travels, has gained WORLD RESPECT. VOTE HILLARY. Let's WIN. Mary Margaret Finnan Sherman Oaks, CA.

Senator Hillary Clinto has a sense of entitlement that is the antithesis of the best aspects of the Democratic Party. I shall be unable to vote for her should the party overturn the wish of the majority

Sending this letter to as many CA super delegates as possible. Integrity must stad for something in the Democratic Party, and I've had enough of Sen. Clinton's dirty tactics and win-at-any-cost campaign. Please support this effort to contact our Super Delegates and return to the core values of the Democratic Party.

Dear Super Delegate,

I am writing you to encourage you to use your Super Delegate vote to support Barack Obama. I am a lifelong Democrat, who has voted in every election for the last twenty years. I voted for Hilary Clinton in the California primary. However, her tactics against Senator Obama over the past months disgust me. I wonder, who is Karl Rove really providing consulting for? Senator McCain or Senator Clinton? This is still the Democratic party, and Democrats treat other Democrats with decency and respect. It is why I am proud to call myself a Democrat. I cannot support her in her all holds barred, win at any cost campaign. As a result I have donated $500+ dollars to the Obama campaign, and will continue to support him financially. I WILL SIT OUT EVERY ELECTION IN WHICH SEN. CLINTON IS ON THE TICKET!!! NOT ONLY WILL I NEVER VOTE FOR HER, I WILL NOT VOTE IN ANY ELECTION SHE IS ON THE BALLOT. PERIOD. We have an oportunity to change the power brockers in DC. Obama is attracting financial support and grass roots support, from ordinary people like me. His coat-tails will help Democrats across the country. If the nomination is taken from him via Clinton's dispicable Rovain tactics, I and many like me will sit out. The final decision will obviously lie with you, the Super Delegates. Please I urge you not to buy into the Media hype and Clinton machine. Please support Sen. Obama as one of California's most valued Super Delagates.

Sincerly,

Concerned California Democrtic

Well said, s t Huey. I too voted for Hillary, and just yesterday started writing to some of the Super Delegates asking them to vote for Barack. Who knew that having an early election in California, meant that the wrong candidate won. I don't think Hillary would win here now. She has lost the "eye on the prize" which is a Democratic win in November.
As for Jim, I suspect you are a Republican. No way will McCain "do great". It will be "W" all over again. The country deserves better.

To the California Super Delegates:
Now more than ever, I believe that Sen. Obama has demonstrated the intelligence, grace, diplomacy, and fortitude for which this country is in disparate need. After listening to our current president at his news conference yesterday, I felt that the sooner we can get someone into the White House who has the courage and the smarts to make the big changes that need to be made, the better off we all will be. I urge you to please consider the needs of this country and to have the guts to step into a new direction and cast you powerful vote for Sen. Obama. Thank you

To the Ca. Super Delegates:

If obama wins the nomination with out the votes from Florida and Michigan counting and the delegates do not take into effect the comments from J. Wright preaching hate and believe obama that for 20 years he did not realize his church was anti-american and racist than i am really sorry because i will switch parties and vote for McCain

Posted by: laura at May 2, 2008 08:53 AM

To the Ca. Super Delegates:

Laura has expressed exactly how I and many of my friends and family members feel about Obama winning the nomination with out the votes from Florida and Michigan being counted and seated.

The delegates cannot disregard obama's 20 years of his close relationship to his church and the anti-American and racist sermons made by his Pastor. If you read his book, Audacity of Hope, he references his Pastor and publicly announced that his Pastor was his mentor and like an uncle to him.

There are other reasons why Obama cannot win and that is; he doesn't relate to the hard-working class, low income and less educated Americans. His own actions and elitest style and mentality is so obvious when he is seen on television. It is arrogant and appalling to see him already acting as if he has won. Also, calling a professional women reporter, sweetie, I find to be offensive. His comment today, in Oregon, telling his audience that they are to treat Hillary's supporter's nice, is another offensive comment and again proves the point, that he comes across as arrogant.

Delegates should remain frozen until the primary contest is over and not continue to move over to obama. Everytime Hillary's momentum is up, delegates continue to endorse obama, especially with her recent West Virginia victory by 41%. The fact that all Californian's(not just San Francisco) voted for Hillary by a strong lead of 10%, is an important factor that should be taken into effect on the vote you will cast.

And, with all due respect, any different outcome would then raise the qestion by many of us, as to what factors were used in casting your votes, especially because the numbers are so very close in this race.

We believe Hillary is the stronger candidate to be our next Commander in Chief and has a strong US Senate record that proves that she has the experience, a President needs, to manage and work successfully with both sides of the Parties.

Posted by: Joan at May 18, 2008 08:00 PM

I don't believe Obama at all. The sincerity he has learned to put into his voice doesn't reach his eyes. I also don't believe that he could sit in the pews and listen to his hateful minister and not say anything or leave that church until he felt forced to do so. If he wins the nomination, I will, for the first time in my life vote for a Republican (as will most of my family and friends).

Posted by: Deborah at June 1, 2008 09:24 AM

Once again America is getting the politicians it deserves. When we let the media feed us their version of a candidate we all lose. It has been very disturbing to watch Senator Obama be all but coronated as the Democratic nominee. He is not ready to be the President of the United States of America, his naivete scares me. Doesn't it bother anyone else that he is frequently described as a "rockstar". Isn't Britney Spears a "rockstar"? I do not about the rest of the country, but I am not drinking the Obama Kool-Aid. Wake up! Obama is no different than any other politician... all ambition and little integrity. In many ways I think he is worse because he holds himself out to be different, but sadly as the weeks go by he has shown that he speaks out of both sides of his mouth as well as any of them. If Obama is the nominee I will hold my nose and vote for McCain.
