Optimism For Obama in California From the Grassroots

Obama-in-California-3.jpgBy Mitchell Schwartz
California State Director
Obama for President Campaign

Since Barack Obama began his campaign for the presidency in February, our campaign has attracted the support of over 100,000 Californians. Over 700 volunteer groups were formed and over 15,000 individuals have taken action to help our campaign in the state. Californians have contributed more to Barack Obama than residents of any other state, including donations from thousands of small dollar contributors who can give again.

Most importantly, the more Californians are getting to know Barack Obama, the more they are convinced that he is the candidate who will deliver change we can believe in. Californians appreciate that Barack Obama had the judgment to oppose the war from the start and has announced a plan to end it as quickly and responsibly as we can. They know that he will challenge the conventional thinking in Washington, and he will oppose efforts to give President Bush a blank check to extend the war in Iraq to Iran. And they’re discovering he is a principled leader who will tell us not what we want to hear, but what we need to hear, about the challenges America faces, with the ability to unite Democrats and Republicans and get things done.

Our campaign in California has leveraged the enthusiastic grassroots support we have found across the state into an organized effort to educate voters about Barack Obama and to turn out the vote on February 5th. We have opened offices in Oakland and Los Angeles, established volunteer-driven organizing teams in all 53 Congressional Districts, and hired an experienced campaign staff that is reaching constituencies, communities, and elected officials and leaders throughout the state.

LAYING THE GROUDWORK

Senator Obama and Michelle Obama have visited the Golden State numerous times in the past year. Senator Obama has drawn huge crowds, never seen this early in a campaign: Over 8,000 people in the middle of a workday in Los Angeles, 12,000 in Oakland, and 6,000 in Santa Barbara.

Senator Obama is reaching out across the divides of the diverse populations of California, meeting with Ministers and Church leaders, answering questions from a Latino crowd at a town hall meeting at Garfield High School in East Los Angeles, kicking off our California Women for Obama program in San Francisco, and detailing his energy policies at a new biofuels business.

Michelle Obama has also appeared throughout the state. Most recently, she attended the Governor 's Conference for Women in Long Beach, sponsored by First lady Maria Shriver on October 22nd.

TURNING GRASSROOTS SUPPORT INTO ACTION

This campaign is one of inspiration, not obligation, and is fusing support from long-time activists with voters inspired to participate for the first time. Legions of supporters have already signed up to support our campaign. Thousands have canvassed for us door to door, the latest effort being the National Walk for Change held on Oct 13th. Supporters gathered in 40 canvass sites throughout the state knocked on a total of 10,000 doors in California, spreading Barack Obama's message of hope and change.

In four California cities -- San Francisco, San Diego, Sacramento and Los Angeles – Obama supporters held rallies on October 2nd marking the 5th anniversary of Senator Obama’s first speech in opposition to the war in Iraq. We are building the largest grassroots campaign in history across the country, one that inspires and empowers people to take charge of the political system and organize, organize, organize. We have the biggest organization on the ground in the early states and February 5th states and we will have the capacity to deliver the biggest turnout on Election Day.

In California, we have been assisted by the legendary Marshall Ganz , who worked with Caesar Chavez for over 15 years organizing farm workers, in creating a field structure that is growing exponentially as more volunteers come on board. Under the direction of Buffy Wicks, we have already organized 70 teams in the 53 Congressional Districts that will be able to make over 1.5 million direct voter contacts.

We are organizing down to the precinct level at targeted areas with a high concentration of Democrats in many parts of the state. Given that there are over 27,000 precincts in California, this is not an easy task, but one we are able to accomplish because of our broad-based grassroots support. We have had scores of training sessions all over California where we give our volunteers the tools and technological support that will allow them to effectively contact voters. Camp Obamas have been held in San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Sacramento, Ventura, Inland Empire, San Jose, Stockton, Palmdale, South Los Angeles and Monterey, training hundreds of supporters who will turn out the vote for Senator Obama on Februrary 5, 2008.

EXPANDING THE CALIFORNIA TEAM

Our campaign has attracted the support of both long-standing elected officials and a new generation distinguished by their commitment to changing the system. Supporting Senator Obama’s candidacy are the two highest ranking women statewide legislative leaders in California, Senate Majority Leader Gloria Romero and Assembly Majority leader Karen Bass. In Los Angeles we have the endorsement of the first woman ever elected citywide in the history of Los Angeles, Controller Laura Chick, as well as City Council President Eric Garcetti. In the Bay area the first African American Female District Attorney in California, Kamala Harris, has been a strong supporter since the first days of the campaign. Steve Westly, the former State Treasurer, serves as our State Chair.

We are grateful for the support of many more Assemblymen and women, State Senators, Mayors and city officials. Our Statewide leadership team is comprised of successful business leaders, environmental leaders, labor officials, and political leaders in the Democratic Party, members of the LGBT community, and student representatives, who together, truly represent the unique diversity that is the strength of this great state.

Our campaign has opened offices in Los Angeles and Oakland in the past month and have staffed up with press secretaries in both locations, field staff to direct the grassroots operation, and constituency outreach coordinators. We are one of only two Democratic campaigns with staffed operations in the state.

PATH TO VICTORY

After we have captured momentum from good performances in the early states, California voters will make a fresh evaluation of the race. Unlike almost all of the other campaigns, we will have the financial resources to compete here.

Our grassroots field program is reaching across the demographic and geographic divisions in California to allow voters to hear from members of their families, friends, and communities about Barack Obama and our campaign. Independent voters are allowed to vote in the Democratic primary in California, and Barack Obama’s record of being able to unify Democrats and Republicans instead of driving a wedge through the political process will resonate among them. Senator Obama’s ability to attract support from independents will help us succeed in our efforts on February 5th.

Optimism about what? Changing the system? What exactly does that entail?
California is becoming bankrupt from public spending, is Obama going to change that? After all that is the States responsibility.
I cannot get excited about a politician that has had no impact on this country other that being in the spotlight. He has said almost nothing about how he is going to change the system.
Get real all these career politicians are dream breakers. A career politician is about as connected to reality as a meth addict. He is just selling you the Emperors new clothes.

I prefer to support progressive candidates, and thus far Obama has not proven to be a candidate. He opposed the War in Iraq, but did little at the time to shift public opinion either in his home state or elsewhere. Since that time he has done little to end our involvement in the eruptin civil war there. His rhetoric on Social Security seems to be taken straight of the Republican playbook, and he's was AWOL on the Mukasey nomination and now he's refusing to lead the fight on FISA and Telecom immunity.

Stop with the platitudes please, I can do THAT myself.

I agree. Obama has done little to convince me that he has the will or ability to enact the changes he sort of describes.

Before deciding who you will cast your vote for president in 2008; why not consider a candidate that has the voting record that matches; what matters to YOU.

Don't let the media limit and decide for you the most viable candidate.

Do yourself a favaor and review each candidates VOTING records and make a determination solely on your fact finding; NOT merely by image or popularity. Our DEMOCRACY is at risk and our Constitution is in peril.

Ya I want somebody who is going Kiss Up to Hugo and Iran.as he stated he would. Then he is in favor of giving away drivers licenses or what ever else he can give away to the ILLEGAL.
What concerns me more is this factural web site,on Obama
http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/anthem.asp

Liberals try to hide this, but all the people that actually look for FACTS made this No 1.

Actually, it was HIllary who wanted to give drivers licenses to illegal immigrants. Did you miss the debate?
