Statement of Governor Schwarzenegger on Failure by California Senate to Pass State Budget

Schwarzenegger-on-budget.gif
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger issued the following statement this evening regarding the state's overdue budget after the California State Senate failed in a rare evening session to pass a budget bill:

"I am very disappointed the Senate failed to pass the budget. The origin of this stalemate was a bold call by Republicans to eliminate the operating deficit this year. I committed to doing exactly that by vetoing $700 million from the budget with my line item authority. There is no reason the people of California should be forced to go a single day longer without a budget. We are now more than a month late and the gridlock is unacceptable.

"I share the concerns expressed by many to address the issue of lawsuits under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), but I don't think it is appropriate to hold up the budget over a non-budget issue.

"Despite my frustration, I want to assure the people of California that I will do everything in my power to make sure the daily operations of state government are not disrupted. However, it's important to know that the longer the budget is delayed, the more the people of California lose. Vendors and contractors that do business with the state can't be paid. Financial markets may lose confidence in the state's ability to conduct business in a responsible manner. If our credit rating drops, taxpayers pay more to finance capital projects.

"The budget delay will not set back my efforts to solve the big issues facing our state. I will continue working to pass a comprehensive water proposal, reform our broken health care system and bring desperately needed redistricting reform.

"Budgets are never easy, especially when revenues are down like this year. However, the budget approved by the Assembly is a responsible budget that fully funds education and public safety, puts aside the biggest reserve fund in memory and pays down our debt. I was prepared to eliminate the operating deficit as requested, therefore the Senate should have approved the budget. My job now is to make sure this does not shut down state government."

Good thing republicans didn't listen to the governer. We need a comprehensive balanced budget and not hopping that government will come true with his word. Democrats need to wake up and understand they will either play by republicans rules or they will not get a budget passed. It's simplea as that, they will not get enough votes unless they give republican what they want.

This is why Republicans are in the minority in the State. They are not in touch with reality and are only interested in themselves and their big interest constituents. They could care less that poor people suffer while they are off playing golf and giving each other high fives for holding up the budget. Sick, sick, sick. They should all be turned out of office in the next election.

Educator you can keep dreamning about them all getting voted out in the next election. Yes they care about business and to me that is all that matter. As for poor, i can care less about them. For all i care they can go to another state or become homeless to me, it makes not different. If it was up to me, i would cut every single social program that was possible to cut. I hope republicans hold out for as long as it takes, even if it means we do not have a budget this year

The sad part in all of this is that the state senate work for us, we hired them, we pay them and even though they have failed to perform their job duties, (ie passing the budget on time, they are still employed!)
To add further insult to injury, they have the nerve to tell us,(their boss)that they will take care of it after they return from vacation!
I don't know about you but where I work, if I failed to perform my job duties on time I would be on a permanent vacation.
Whomever we voted for, Democrats or Republicans...they are being paid to work it out, work together to get the job done not to sling the blame back and forth.
Personally, I think the system in flawed. How ridiculous is it that important bills like the California Environmental Quality Act are tacked on to the State Budget??? Unbelievable! The budget should be examined on its own and passed on its own as should all bills.
'We the people' need to become proactive and vocal.
We fear the government and sit back and accept whatever they hand us.
This would not fly in Europe. You can bet that the people would take to the streets in the hundreds of thousands. The government truly 'Works' for the people there.
Whats stopping us???

Dmitriy,
After decifering your comment to educator, judging by the poor spelling and grammar I can only assume you are an immigrant here in the USA taking advantage of the american dream. Your cold callous comments that indicate you only care for your own wellbeing speak volumes about your charactor. Perhaps we need to reform our immigration screening process to include a psychological profile that would weed our sociopaths such as yourself.
How embarrassing and shameful.

Hello Governor,

I would like you to resolve this budget crises as soon as possible. I work at a hospital that greatly depends on payments from medi-cal and other state programs. A lot of peoples jobs are at stake here.

Thanks Jerrilynn

Budget will be passed as soon as Democrats give in. It could be as soon as they come back from vacation or it could be month. Either way it will not happen till Republicans get what they want. You got 2 choices 1)get a loan 2)get another job.

Dmitriy is a great poster-child for the Democrats. It is his/her thinking that will get the beloved Republicans thrown out of office. Thanks, Dmitriy--you are doing a great service for the country with your ideas and accusations.

Who is this Dmiitriy anyway? He has a comment about everthing that is written. The only thing he has proven to me is that uneducated idiots shouldn't own computers!I think he should take a long walk off of a short pier! What does he hope to gain by his hateful comments about the poor?
To Chelan Maierhoffer
Thankyou for your most accurate statements about our governments inability to do the job WE pay them to do and your response to Dmitriy he needs to put a cork in it. The budget issue affects everyone not just one self centered jerk.

Thank you Julie...I am just completely frustrated right now. I work for a small non-profit community hospital where we struggle at the best of times to serve our community. Most of our patients are hard working people that have little (medi-cal) or no insurance. We turn no one away. We rely on our medi-cal dollars from the state to keep us afloat. The delay in approval of the budget is causing great hardship for our beloved hospital and community.
I would like to know if our state senate are getting their checks cashed while we are not? Hardly seems fair that they get a paycheck for not doing their job. I would like to start a petition to enforce a salary freeze on the senate until the budget is passed, perhaps that would speed up the process.
what do you think?

Posted by: chelan at August 7, 2007 11:30 PM

So with all that said...when will the state pass the budget?

Posted by: Claire Bell at August 8, 2007 07:57 PM

I am a Family Home Childcare provider for lots of years and just want to say that this is happening every year and is hurting a lot of people. I have read all the comments here and so agree with all of you and feel for everyone of you. It is a shame that such a thing is allowed to happen. The slap in the face for me is the fact that "those people" are allowed to go on vacation and just can leave everything as it is?????
