Garcia vs. Parra--How Republicans Don't Serve Their Constituents II

Sara-Nichols.gif

By Sara S. Nichols

And another thing about Republicans in the California legislature, they don't vote their district, even when they win a tough election. They cow tow to a minority of the party instead of their constituents. Case in point Bonnie Garcia (R-Palm Springs). In 2004 she picks off a Democratically leaning Assembly district in a squeaker of an election. You'd think she'd be watching her back, voting somewhere near the middle, giving her constituents what they think they'd be getting from a Latina legislator.

Well, in her first term, she might have given the Democrats like two tough votes (maybe she was one of the budget votes). Those two votes, coupled with telling the public that she wouldn't kick the Guvernator out of bed, got her labeled a "moderate" from the press.

But the rest of the time, she's right there with the Republican pac(k): anti-environment, anti-consumer, anti-working family, right down the line. She rides this "moderate" label into an easy victory for a second term. Now, the budget is late and she's showing no signs of moderation.

Contrast this to Nicole Parra (D-Bakersfield)who campaigned as a progressive in a hotly contested Democratic primary in 2002, won the general election by a coupla hundred votes and then proceeded to become a "50 percent vote"--meaning she votes the right way 50% of the time. The other half of the time she's voting like a Republican (see above).

Why is it that Republicans are called moderate just for flirting with the Governor and the Budget and Democrats actually worry about watching their back with constituents?

My guess is that the answer is a combination of corporate money and lazy media. The media is complicit in this, never pointing out that Republicans routinely vote against the interests of average people. And many legislators want an excuse to sell out to big corporations which means for them to tow the Republican line, or move over to it.

Republican brains are wired differently--literally (MRI studies have determined it). The 2/3rd's vote is the root of all evil in California, and combined with the aforementioned brain wiring, create an atmosphere where reactionaries can rule.

publius (aka cavala?), your shallow loathing and lack of tolerance of anyone in opposition to your exhaulted visions is showing...and is apparently shared by the author of this article.

It is no surprise (or perhaps it is to you both...) that a candidate is far left/right in their respective parties primary yet goes towards the middle in the general election. Just watch Hillary do it again over the next year.

Are you just mad at Garcia because she is a republican? Then you should be mad at her (majority of)constiutents who voted for her: they all saw the "R" next to her name. There was no "D-R" or any variation thereof there. Here, the majority voted/ruled; same concept you want in the leguislature over the existing 2/3 thing isn't it?

Here is another political clue for you: Politicians, all of them, are SUPPOSED to "watch their backs" with constituents. That is how they get re-elected. To suggest those of any party do not is naive. Maybe Garcia won't be re-elected for your alleged not doing what her constituents (the democratic ones) want. Nicole Parra, as you do point out does "play" (don't you really mean representing?) both sides of the fence because her district is made up nearly equally of both sides of the fence. Get it? This is not a hard concept to grasp.

In addition, you guys need to stop the "poor little democrats vs corporate money aka republicans" drivel. The same Parra last year had her campaign coffers bloated with corporate and union cash, some 3 times more than her challenger,, some 95% of it from outside her district and only because there is a "D" after her name. The Democratic Party also stuffed significant cash into her re-election. If you guys don't like the way she votes, I suggest you cut her off from your own left/democrat funding sources in the future. Apparently, the voters in her district would disagree with you on her performance as last years ballot box showed.

Republicans are people who had never had anything bad happen to them. Republicanism has been described as a form of mental illness.

The party claims to exist to limit government and build families yet its politicians now have CDCR with a $12 billion dollar budget. It is a failed agency that has destroyed hundreds of thousands of families, and done more to hurt the public safety than to protect it.

Some of the worst child molesters and sex offenders are Republicans yet they passed Prop 83 for political purposes, backed by the Governor (sued for sexual harassment whose nude photos are all over the internet, not to mention his violent, lewd movies), also backing sex offender laws are Bill O'Reilly, also sued for Sexual harrassment and a disgraceful hypocrite if there ever was one...and then the father behind Jessica's Law, Mark Lunsford, now has his boy under arrest for child molestation. Alberto Gonzales, now unanimously deemed to be a criminal covered up Republican Pedophilia yet he is still in charge of the US Dept of Justice

Stop Republican Pedophilia

The voters need to get these Fascist hypocrites out of power and anyone who votes with them.

Nice article, it's good to have some real journalists out there, this is what is missing. But then the Republicans control the advertising budgets so is it any wonder that they have almost destroyed our entire country, especially California, with hardly a whimper from the media

Thank you Mr. Russo for all your patriotic work!

Good gosh, the first thing dems/leftist/socialists do is say their opponent/right/republicans are mentally ill, wired differently, etc. along with sweeping generalizations only the simple minded would grasp outright ("Republicans are people who had never had anything bad happen to them"). Sure, right...

If the republicans/righties have a strength (or a political only failing) is they tolerate folks better for who they are (while dems/lefties only SAY they do)and view the world with a more pragmatic logic devoid of immediate short-term staisfaction "feel good" programs or causes.

OK, IF, IF the father of Jessica's Law has a son who is a child molester, is it right to paint the father with some slimy brush too? If so, then Al Gore is also a lousy parent whose son Al Gore III was recently caught driving under the influence (thank GOD in a Prius...) at a high rate of speed; easily coulda killed someone.

A righty would condem and/or protect the privacy of BOTH scenarios logically. A lefty only sees the conservative/righties "failings".

Liberals are holding up Jessica's laws in other states, not conservatives. Wasn't Democrat Parra mentioned here a co-sponsor on Jessica's law here in California. Do you have a problem with that? See, logic CAN prevail if it is only looked at!

Liberal dems are are on the same side of illegal immigration as Cardinal Mahony in Los Angeles. Fine. But the good Cardinal is also covering up for priest pedophilia that occured during his watch. Where is your outrage?

Clinton's Attorney General Janet Reno (a dem) sent the tanks into the Waco compound killing dozens, including children, on what grounds? Easily coulda waited them out... Where is you continuity of outrage?

President Clinton ORDERED the minor child Elian Gonzales back to Cuba. It is that wonderful place with great heathcare (according to Moore), journalists in jail/executed, no civil rights, etc. A place young Elian's mother DIED trying to get herself and her son away from. Yet Clinton sent him back to that communist/socialist "paradise" with that great healthcare. Where is your outrage?

Stop Democratic Politics of Selective Outrage.

The voters need to get these socilaist hippocrits out of power and anyone who votes with them.

No, wait a second. It wouldn't be fair, right or commonsensacle to paint blindly "...anyone who votes with them" with a negative broad brush. Perhaps they logically applied all standards and values to an issue and voted with both their hearts and minds and not in lockstep with those who do not. Tolerance is a good thing when it is actually applied and not just talked about...

Nichols is right. Garcia is an arrogant official who thumbs her nose at her constitutents.

And I never use pseudonyms.
