Crucial Vote on Cell Phone Consumer Protection Bill Today

By Richard Holober
Executive Director
Consumer Federation of California
Legislation to protect California cell phone users against outrageous early termination fees and other industry fraud and abuse faces a crucial State Senate vote today, Thursday June 7. Yesterday the bill was one vote short of the 21 needed for passage.
Please tell your State Senator to vote Yes on Senate Bill 831 (Lowenthal). Link here to send your message now.
Background:
SB 831 would give a consumer the right to cancel a cell phone contract without having to pay huge early termination fees for 30 days after signing a contract, or for 10 days after you receive your first bill—whichever comes later. The bill would also phase out early termination fees so that consumers cancelling in the 23rd month of a 2 year contract would only pay a small fraction of the initial termination fee.
The legislation also gives consumers the right to cancel without penalty when a phone company raises rates during the lifetime of a contract, and limits a consumer’s responsibility for calls made on a lost or stolen cell phone.
The cell phone industry has topped the list of all industries in consumer complaints filed with the Better Business Bureau for several years.
Giant cell phone companies are spending a fortune on lobbyists and political campaign contributions to kill this bill.

Senator Negrete-McLeod’s Sacramento phone number is (916) 651-4032.
Please tell the office: “I live in the Senator’s district. We need her vote today on SB 831. It provides important protections for telephone consumers.” Make sure you give your name, address, and phone number.
