A Mother Pleads for Passage of California Compassionate Choices Act

By Nancy Kelem
[Editor's note: The following statement was delivered today at a press conference in the Capitol on AB 374.]
My name is Nancy Kelem. I am 53 years old and live in Silicon Valley. I have a B.S. in Math and Computer Science and an M.S. in Engineering from UCLA.
After working for over 20 years as a computer scientist, I quit work to raise my kids. Twenty months ago I was just a nerd mom volunteering at school and chauffeuring my kids around. I have three young kids, an 11-yr-old boy, an 8-year-old boy, and 6-yr-old girl, whom we adopted from China.
In 2005 I was diagnosed with colon cancer that spread to my liver and lymph nodes. Every 3 months I have a CT scan that tells me what my chances are for another 6 months. My doctor says that eventually the cancer always adapts, and becomes resistant to the drugs.
I hope none of you ever have to plead for aid in dying. I hope that when your time comes you are fortunate enough to have a peaceful passing without experiencing the "Death Throes" which my dictionary defines as a hard or painful struggle. I am totally focused on living even so I need to think about my death. My concerns regarding dying are my wish to protect my kids from witnessing horrors. I don't want them to hear me scream. I had 2 babies without epidurals, so I'm not a pain wimp but I have to be honest with myself.
I am here today to ask for your mercy, and your vote for this compassionate legislation. I want to protect my family from the stigma of having my death labeled a suicide. My kids will probably have to experience the worse trauma of my ultimate, hideous deterioration. Eventually, I'll be unconscious, so I won't have to know. You can't punish a corpse. But I know now, and that knowledge forces me to beg you to pass a law protecting a basic human right: the right for a peaceful death. I want to thank the authors or this bill for inviting me to speak with you today.

Dear Nancy,
Your strength and determination in encouraging. My life slightly parallels yours to the effect that I too also have Stage IV Colon Cancer diagnosed in Jan. 2006 with mets to my liver, lymph nodes, and lungs. Also I am a 31 year old father single handedly raising an 8 year old daughter. Good luck with AB 374 and your health. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.
Sincerely,
Nate Barrell

Hi Nancy
I'm very sorry to hear of your plight. I too have cancer and would like to end my life with some dignity. I hope I don't have to travel to Oregon to do it. I was wondering what I can do to help ensure the passage of this much needed legislation.

I have Stage IV colon cancer with liver mets and I feel the same way you do. I do not want to travel to Oregon, I simply want to die peacefully in my home, with dignity and freedom from pain. This is a freedom of choice we all must have. God bless you.

I would like to say that I feel so sorry for all of you that are sick. But you must remember that you all were blessed with the gift of life to live to where you are now. My mother was sick with alzheimers for 8yrs until she finally gave up and passed away. She suffered greatly. In the end she couldn't walk, talk, or swallow. I felt relieved for her to pass on. I felt kind of bad, but I know that how she suffered that she was probably ready for her life to end too! I miss her greatly. I can't really say that I understand for I have only had 7 colon polyps removed. But as far as with my mom, I think that she may have wanted the same thing for her life to end. But you have to think about what's in store for the after life. Do you really want to answer to GOD on judgement day about killing yourself? And then sometimes people can be in so much pain that they truly don't know what they are saying, so you can't really make the call that they TRULY want to die. I don't know. I think that we should all wait until its time for us to go. But then again, I am on the other side too. Its hard to see or more less BE the person that suffers! All I can say is ask GOD where it is that you need to be. Maybe HE will grant you a peaceful death!

In response to Shemicia:
When a beloved pet becomes terminally ill, it is mercifully allowed to die. When a murderer is condemned to death, he/she is given a peaceful death without pain. If there is a God who is our father, ask yourself if any father would wish his child to suffer needlessly when their body is going to die anyway ! I cannot understand all this nonsense when people decide they know what God wants.
