Democratic Radio Address: Celebrate Earth Day By Pitching In

DeLaTorre_Radio-medium.jpg
In the Democratic weekly radio address Assemblymember Hector de la Torre talks about the 37th annual celebration of Earth Day (Sunday, April 22nd).

Assemblymember de la Torre talks about the efforts made by the State Legislature to preserve the environment for future generations, including the passage of Assembly Bill 32 – the Global Warming Solutions Act. But de la Torre says saving the environment is something everyone, not just lawmakers, can do, “Everyone can do their part – no action is too small that it won’t matter, and no challenge is so great that it can’t be met.”

Hello. This is Hector de la Torre, member of the California State Assembly

This weekend marks the 37th celebration of Earth Day, a day when all of us -- big and small -- can take steps -- big and small -- to take better care of our planet.

In a way, people who care about the environment are like parents at a family picnic – there to make sure everyone enjoys the surroundings, but also making sure that everything’s kept nice for the next families who come along.

In California we hold some of the world’s most amazing natural resources in trust for the future.

And we understand the threat global warming poses to our coast, our forests and environmental treasures like Yosemite, Lake Tahoe and Joshua Tree.

So, Democratic legislators and the Republican Governor came together and passed the Global Warming Solutions Act to roll back greenhouse gas emissions to 1990 levels.

We see what global warming means to our environment, our economy, and our energy security. And if we can pass legislation to fight it, then other states can and Congress and the President can too.

In the Assembly we’re working to encourage green buildings and develop alternative fuels, and we’re making sure California’s tough environmental laws don’t get chipped away or undercut.

But on Earth Day, it’s important to remember that protecting the environment isn’t just passing a bill – it’s raising your voice and it’s riding a bus and it’s picking up trash and it’s cleaning up creeks.

Everyone can do their part – no action is too small that it won’t matter, and no challenge is so great that it can’t be met.

I hope everyone has a good Earth Day this Sunday –maybe even celebrate with a family picnic.

And I hope we all remember to keep things nice for the generations to come.

Thank you for listening. This has been Assemblymember Hector de la Torre.
