San Francisco Values: Pelosi’s Faith and Immigrant Labor Rights

Ken-Burt.gif

By Kenneth C. Burt

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi quoted Pope Benedict quoting Saint Augustine to underscore the moral imperative to advance the common good at a Friday night banquet in San Francisco sponsored by the Intituto Laboral De La Raza.

The labor leaders, immigrant activists, and political officials cheered as she stated that raising the minimum wage was only the beginning. According to Pelosi, the House will soon pass a comprehensive immigration reform measure and the Employee Free Choice Act, making it easier for workers to unionize.

Pelosi’s infusion of morality into the fight for social justice flows from her own Italian Catholic upbringing. It also reflects a new interest — and a potential political partnership — with religious leaders seeking to protect their flock.

Only days before Pelosi’s statement in San Francisco, Cardinal Roger Mahony of Los Angeles made headlines in the Catholic press by advocating a similar idea at an immigrant conference at St. Thomas College in St. Paul, Minnesota.

“We must also respond in the political realm through advocacy in local communities, state legislatures and Congress to ensure that our nation’s immigration laws protect human life and uphold human dignity in the face of changing circumstances,” stated Mahony.

Such a paradigm was central to President Roosevelt’s New Deal coalition when a quarter of the population was either immigrants or the children of immigrants, and the church regularly supported the Democrats’ labor friendly economic policies.

The newer arrivals are receiving help from the faith-filled grandchildren and great grandchildren of earlier immigrants. Among those present at the Latino-oriented banquet was Michael Hardman, a sign painter union official who oversees the Bay Area Catholic Labor Committee. Hardman and other union leaders joined the march on the State Capitol last year in favor of immigrant rights. And next month Bishop Ignatius Wang will celebrate Mass for the labor leaders, providing moral encouragement for their efforts.

Cardinal Mahony has long advocated for comprehensive immigration reform and has assisted various union organizing efforts in Los Angeles. For example, when Justice for Janitors went on strike, he offered Mass for the largely Spanish-speaking strikers. He also worked behind the scenes to help resolve the dispute. Decades earlier as a young priest Mahony marched with Cesar Chavez and, as the bishop of Stockton, he served as a Governor Jerry Brown appointee to the Agricultural Labor Relations Board.

Pelosi symbolically underscored the linkage between faith and social justice at her inaugural ceremonies. She held a celebratory Mass at her old Baltimore parish and asked Stephen A. Privett, a Jesuit father, to provide the invocation at her swearing-in in Washington, D.C.

Some pundits recognized in Rev. Privett’s hometown link as he serves as president of the University of San Francisco. But no one commented on Privett’s own ties to the church’s social justice tradition. He wrote his dissertation on Archbishop Robert Lucy, the head of the Bishop’s Committee for the Spanish-Speaking in the 1940s and 1950s.
Cardinal Mahony and Speaker Pelosi are part of a dynamic effort to reconnect and to strengthen the linkage between labor, immigrants and politicians that proved so helpful to earlier waves of immigrants — Irish, Italian and Latino.

The little known role of Catholic priests and faith communities in empowering Latinos is one of the many insights contained in my forthcoming book, The Search for a Civic Voice: California Latino Politics, to be published in the spring.

So many things in conflict here: Faith? What about Pelosi's position on abortion? Is it in conflict with the Catholic church's? How about homosexuality and the church vs Pelosi? Law and order (legislation)?: What is her position on (Illegal-that word was left out of the article above) immigrants/illegal aliens? To uphold any laws she may create, shouldn't she be a proponent of upholding existing immigration laws too? I'm all for freedom, diversity and tolerance but don't paint a picture that just isn't true; this "merging" of religion and a politician is just propaganda.

Posted by: Sid at February 12, 2007 09:54 AM

Sid: I think you are missing something here that is genuine and goes a bit deeper that you so blithely dismiss as propaganda.

I grew up in the Catholic Church, went ot parochial school, and was an altar boy and in the future priest's club. I can't speak for Nancy Pelosi-- or for others. but I can say this. Although I have grown away from the church and see things very differently when it comes to choice on abortion, rights for gays, the unequal treatment of women, and the like, I nevertheless got much of my core moral and ethical grounding from the social gospel--love your neighbor as yourself, the love of money being the root of all evil, and the devotion that many still active in the church have to the poor and dispossessed.

Posted by: Frank D. Russo at February 12, 2007 12:27 PM

Frank,

I would never pick on ones personal beliefs, especially as I share many of them with so many others. However, this article is something of a supposed "kumbaya" of religion with a political party and it's principle members which is not borne out in what that party DOES in siding with things the church considers an abomination in the big picture; the appearance is the church and the democrats are getting along "just fine" when the church doctrine and rank and file members may greatly oppose liberal positions on homosexuality, abortion, divorce, gay marriage, etc. Go to a "Latino Catholic church" and ask them on their views on these issues; their faith and family values are generally stronger than that of their white brothers and sisters. This article is more white-wash than substance when considering all the angles and not how Pelosi/other individuals were brought up, what events they go to, etc.

Posted by: Sid at February 12, 2007 01:50 PM

Sid,

A couple of years ago I opened the Sacramento Bee to see a full-page ad sponored by a Catholic Right to Life group attacking a dozen legislators for their pro-choice voting record. A few days later I joined Cardinal Mahony at the Cathedral in Los Angeles for a breakfast co-sponsored by the AFL-CIO and the Latino Legislative Caucus (that included people targeted in the Right to Life ad).

The Catholic-labor-Latino-Demcoratic linkages are indeed complex -- and thus need to be better understood. I think Pelosi is seeking to do just that, in part because a shift in Catholic voting was part of the 2006 Democratic victory story.

Posted by: Kenneth C. Burt at February 12, 2007 06:38 PM

I hope Speaker Pelosi can draw the strength from her faith and exercise the leadership needed to pass comprehensive immigration reform legislation in the House this year.

Last year Speaker Hastert refused to conference the Senate Bill S 2611.

Last week over 1500 American-Irish gathered in San Francisco to support of the Irish Lobby for Immigration Reform and their efforts on behalf of the 50,000 undocumented Irish living and working in the United States.

I welcome all efforts by the Speaker Pelosi and the Catholic Church leadership and any other politician or religious group that can help pass comprehensive immigration reform legislation with a path to earned legal status THIS year.

Good Luck, Nancy! We'll be praying for you in St. Barnabas Parish in the Woodlawn section of the Bronx (by the way, we have Italian language mass every week). Legalize the Irish!

Posted by: seanilirsupporter at February 12, 2007 08:03 PM

Mr. Burt, thanks for your further conversation. I would suggest that the war in Iraq was the reason for the democratic "victory" in Novembers election and not due to any Pelosi or other democratic party members embracing any religion let alone the Catholic faith as you may be suggesting. To be critical, I don't see how the democrats position on abortion/Roe vs. Wade, or gay marriage/homosexuality in general is "complex" as it appears in OPPOSITION to what the Catholic church's positions on said subjects are.

Why the heck are there 50,000 undocumented Irish working in American and how do we know this number is accurate?

San Francisco has VALUES?

"Pelosi’s Faith and Immigrant Labor Rights" 2/12/07

The Mayor of San Francisco has an illicit affair with his aide's wife and apologizes. Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi a few steps from the White House doesn't know the difference between LEGAL Immigrants and law-breaking illegal aliens? The new Speaker of the House attends a banquet with Intituto Laboral De La Raza instead of with her American Constituents who apparently have no importance in her life ? On top of that it is well-known that the Catholic hierarchy has protected pedophiles in their organization for decades.

We as a Nation are in real trouble if this lawlessness and stupidity is considered of VALUE!

Are you people for REAL?

Posted by: Diane at February 13, 2007 09:15 AM

"Are you people for REAL?"

I think so. It's your basic liberal "put your head in the sand" while your country is taken from you

This article speaks of pro-Mexico forces meeting with the traitors we call "leaders" & planning the American middle-class's demise & all they can talk about is abortion

Let me clue you in folks. None of the issues you hold dear will matter once the elite turns our country into the third world so corporations can see a bigger profit

What absolute idiocy

Posted by: Mike at February 13, 2007 10:42 AM

My belief that big business, pro-illegal amnesty groups, the A.C.L.U., the government of Mexico and the Catholic church now run my country has not been lessened by this article. Does the Catholic church still get tax exemption? Why, because they are in the group running things.

Posted by: Ann McNett at February 13, 2007 11:36 AM

To Ann,

My sentiments exactly, I wrote to the ACLU and told them they were destroying our country we have to get rid of them and the IRS after that.

I have always believed that politics and religion don't mix.

I am Catholic and I will not allow the church to demand something of me that I can't give in the name of God!

I will not allow them to say I am a racist because I don't want other people coming into my country and demanding benefits, free this free that all because they are poor.

When my grandparents came from Ireland the Catholic Church slammed the door on my grandfather when he asked for food for his family.

Nancy Pelosi, defend your country men and woman we are in pain from what all of you politicians are doing to us. This is going to destroy us sooner than you think.
God Bless us all....

While there are smaller groups of other nationalities in the broad mix of the illegal population, illegal immigrants are primarily Mexican.

"Withdraw thy foot from thy neighbour's house; lest he be weary of thee, and [so] hate thee." Proverbs 25:17
Violence and corruption have stymied progress towards a life of peace and prosperity for every Mexican. Rather than working hard to mitigate the causes,
the Mexican government exports its problems to the U.S. I can only imagine what Jesus Christ would say about this vexing situation. As a devout Catholic, I
know He would be furious with the corrupt Mexican government, its policies, and the Mexican people who support them. I'm sure Jesus would be gathering
a team of 21st century apostles to help the honest, hard-working Mexican people rid their country of the obstacles to a better life: corruption, gangs, gang
violence, drugs and drug trafficking, and so on. Why draw off the very people who might turn Mexico into a true democracy without all the graft and corruption?

The American people overwhelmingly do not support amnesty for illegal immigrants. Attrition through enforcement is the only workable approach to this most vexing problem.

Posted by: Tom at February 13, 2007 02:04 PM

“Intituto Laboral De La Raza,” who? Why do these people insist that they are a race? Why don’t they just say who they really are, "Mexican nationalists." They should be talking to Mexican government officials about Mexico's labor rights. Why does House Speaker Nancy Pelosi put Mexican interest above American interests? The real winners in this game(the race to the bottom) are the multi national corporations and other would be slave masters...

Posted by: Domack at February 13, 2007 03:46 PM

I really find it so difficult to believe that so many people aren't watching the news.

The numbers of murders and violent crime are steadily increasing. Children it seems are the most recent target of illegals. A 14year old was raped in my community just months ago by an illegal Mexican migrant. A 13year old was was raped just a week ago. The assailant had a Hispanic description.

A Tucson, Arizona father of three was murdered by two illegal Mexican migrants a little over a week ago for $60. The shooter said that he and his friend had been taking drugs for two days and needed money for more.

Blacks are commonly targeted in L.A. by MS-13 gang members. Drive by shootings had increased so much the Mayor had to call in the Dept. of Homeland Security - over 761 violent immigrants were arrested 400+ have already been deported.

Law Enforcement are frequently murdered in the line of duty.

Latino - Hispanic illegal migrants march the street displaying their native flags and thumb their noses at our immigration laws. Our government does very little to enforce laws that have already been amended, rewritten and comprimised in the last decade.

When will it end? For some Americans it will end when they have beeen murdered or maybe their child will be raped.

When will Americans citizens of all nationalities say Enough is Enough?

I wholeheartedly agree with Tom's comments. I believe he said it all. I too think these people should go back to their own country and do something to rid their own country of the obstacles to a better life. I do not support amnesty nor do I support citizenship for parents if their child is born here. The reason for that law has long served its purpose and is being used to inundate this country with parents, their parents, uncles, aunts, etc. of one little innocent baby.I empathize with these people who want a better life but they should not be allowed to walk in to our country and take ours away from us.

I am a WW2 veteran who went to war for AMERICAN's rights to be free. I didn't then and don't now, condone anyone trying to shove Illegal Aliens down my throat. I don't down anyone's form of religeon, I just believe in the Bible and what it stands for.I don't believe in the marriage of Religion and Politics. I think like about 86 persent of Good Americans, that Ms. Pelosi's political approach is about as good as George Bush's approach. Both are standing side by side against Good Honest working Americans and their actions are making this great Country head straight and fast to being the largest Third world Nation on earth. What will they do then? Nothing. Because they will have enough of our tax money to buy their way with the Illegals, along with the ACLU and big robber barons of big business. We good honest Americans will be living in the gutter with all those who would tear us down, if we are allowed to live. Why doesn't the Illegals get together and fight for their freedom in their own Country? instead of running ours down. They send enough under the table money to their home country. They live 4 families or more in a run down shack, (in the shadows) and most Americans don't see that going on. If they did, they would take up arms so to speak, against Illegals and they would get the Law makers of this Country to stop importing way too many legal immigrants with them importing all their relatives.
That's the way I feel. Edward Carver

I take the same position with regards to illegal immigration by any person's. If they want to come to the USA, proper
ways are available. As for the criminal
element! enforce the boarders, and round them up. Minor deport, Major prosecute
Keep up the the pressure on all branches
of the GOV. to enforce the laws or correct
the ones that donot work. jw

Posted by: JW at February 13, 2007 09:02 PM

As a Catholic, I ask my church to stop meddling into politics because I have not forgiven you for getting Bush elected and you are not speaking for all Catholics!
As a democrat I want to remind Nancy Pelosi that; charity begins at home. Our unskilled Americans can’t support their families because wages are low due to too many illegal workers competing for the same jobs. Giving amnesty to those who come here for economic reasons is wrong, and only benefits employers, not taxpayers.

Posted by: Jackie in Washington at February 13, 2007 09:22 PM

Yes, legalize the Irish illegal aliens. Fly them all back to Ireland!

I notice the Catholic Church is all hot to legalize millions of Catholic illegal aliens, but doesn't give a flip about the millions of non-Catholic LEGAL immigrants waiting for green cards around the world. Because the wait is so long, thousands of these legal immigants die before getting a green card and thus admittance to the US. What would Jesus say about that?

A friend of mine said I'd enjoy reading this "blog".
They were wrong.
This reads like a BAD Soap Opera !
SERIOUSLY !
One side says WE'RE RIGHT and the REST of you are RACISTS !
The OTHER Side says WE have the Right to do ANYTHING WE WANT because we are doing so under the Label of PATRIOTISM !

Everyone here is basically standing on either side of a "fence" and spitting at each other.
Every So - Called "Challenge, and threat is hollow and juvenile !

*I know I can't spell - so what !

Anyway - SOME of you may know who I am... and some dont have a clue.
I think SOME of you have even made personal threats against me in other "Forums"...
*Thats a SHOUT OUT to DARRYL REVOK !
hahahahaaaaaaaaaaa

Either way makes no matter to me.

I am a CHRISTIAN
And Since I don't fear Death, I do NOT fear ANY Man !
Please spare me your hollow threats and juvenile taunts of retribution and violence.
Pain is but a passing flurry of nerve endings which are simply firing off, and Death ?
Death is but a Doorway to my goal - To be in the presence of the LORD.
*I've almost died 9 times and trust me - When it's your time to go ?
You wont feel a thing and you won't even know what "HIT" you , so to speak...
At least, that's what the Near Death Experiences were like for me...

Here is my statement and after this you can go back to spitting at each other.

1) Calling a Patriotic Group - such as Save Our State, or the MINUTEMEN, "Racist" - AS A WHOLE -
Is RIDICULOUS !
Statements such as " ...ALL the people in those Organizations are "RACIST..."
Is "GUMP-LIKE"

That is a statement made by Confused, Desperate, Socialistic, North America Union Loving, ANTI-BORDER FENCE, Illegal Immigration encouraging, Liberal, Anarchist, Communists who lack a education or even the understanding of our laws, Constitution, and Bill of Rights.
IF you are one of those people who LABEL an ENTIRE population within an Organization "RACIST" - make those assumptions based on 1 picture which was taken over a 1 1/2 years ago, - OR - because of the violent and aggressive acts of a few misguided, and NOW dis-allowed people who attempted to join either group, (*I'm talking about the "STORMFRONT" people who tried to join SOS and the MINUTEMEN in 2005)
Then YOU need to OPEN your Mind, Spirit and eyes !

Go Read the Blogs on SOS
COME to a Day Labor Site Protest and TALK to US !
Talk to the Citizens of the cities we visit !
90% of those people LOVE the MINUTEMEN !
They LOVE "Save Our State" !
The Illegals are DESTROYING AMERICA from within, one city at a time and Bleeding Heart , Illegal Immigration Sympathetics are Helping them to accomplish their goal.
What IS their Goal !?
It's
RECONQUISTA !
*YES !
Unfortunately, 90% of ILLEGAL ALIEN IMMIGRANTS ARE MEXICAN !
Why?
BECAUSE their Country is RIGHT THERE !
CANADIANS dont "invade" America because their country TAKES CARE OF THEM !
MEXICO is the 13th Richest Country in the WORLD !
Yet The Corrupt Mexican Govt Encourages their poor citizens to illegally enter the USA , while the Mexican Govt VIGOROUSLY Defends it's Southern Borders !
Do you need MORE evidence ?
OK !

*I talk to the Counter-Protesters ALL THE TIME !
Even though I am NOT supposed too - I do anyway !
I have an OPEN Mind. Only to the fact that there is MORE to the situation than an ENTIRE Population of illegals crossing our border to simply "Work" and "To find a better life"....
La RAZA, MEcha, Aztlan, The BROWN BERETS, MEXICA.COM, answerLA, and ALL the REST of the EXTREMELY RACIST (And MEXICAN BASED) RECONQUISTA Organizations are succeeding when LEGAL AMERICAN CITIZENS (*OF EVERY RACE) Begin to Fight with each other, and Don't band together to support AMERICA and it's Laws of Sovereignty !
There are irrefutable facts which prove that illegal immigration is destroying our country.
ROCK SOLID, Irrefutable Facts !
It's also wrong to condemn humans for trying to survive.
However,
The CULPRITS of this INVASION and the Entities behind the impending and eventual downfall of the United States of AMERICA are NOT the uneducated Dirt Poor Mexicans which are pouring across our borders everyday.
It IS, in FACT the United States Government which is focused , like a LASER BEAM, on COMPLETING the North American Union, Destroying the LEGAL AMERICAN MIDDLE CLASS, and ESTABLISHING a BORDERLESS CONTINENT - populated by an Uneducated, Illiterate, UNambitious, Below-Blue-collar, SUB-Culture of Minimum wage earning, NO Benefits requiring, SLAVE LABOR FORCE .

I want to say I agree with what Edward Carver wrote. I am a Democrate and I am disapointed in what Pelosi is trying to do.
She needs to work on seeing that immigration laws are inforced by all branches of the Government. I do not support amnesty. There are enough here already.
I am also in agreement with other comments made on this page.

Posted by: La DELL Forester at February 13, 2007 10:45 PM

The American people are fed up with ANY amnesty or
"guest worker" plan. I have continually sent faxes through an organization to both senators and my congressional representative. When these politicians
continue to show bleeding hearts for the unfortunate ILLEGAL (lawbreaking) aliens, I keep writing them that OUR citizens will fill ALL the jobs that are
taken by the "necessary" illegal aliens.

When the politicians finally listen to their constituents, they will find out that we don't like to see emergency rooms at our hospitals closed because they can't pay the bills for the illegal aliens using the emergency rooms for ordinary health care. We don't like to pay for food stamps, education, and all the "free" services used by the illegal aliens. We also don't like to pay for the incarceration of the criminal element of the illegal aliens either.

We want our taxes used for OUR OWN CITIZENS and not wasted on the needs of illegal aliens. We also want to decrease the number of legal immigrants until the economy can handle what we already have. We want to end the chain immigration. That will end the non working relatives influx into our country.
The bleeding heart politicians want us to have compassion on those families that are separated because one member chose to leave their own country to become an illegal alien in ours. THEY made the decision to separate the family, not us!

Is this a Christian concept? Absolutely! We are to protect our families from any invasion, which is what we have. We have helped millions in time of tragedy, and have sent millions of hard earned dollars to those in need, but we don't invite them into our homes. We help them where they are and help them by teaching them how to survive in any situation. But still, we don't invite them into our homes. We will fill many of their needs, but will not endanger ourselves.

Please forgive my pulpit for I truly pray for those that want to better themselves. One of the best ways is for them to insist on their own government to utilize the wealth of their own country to better their own citizens rather than help them get into ours. We want an end to the poverty sent into our country by the illegal aliens. You can send a fax to your senators or representatives to let them know how you feel about the whole immigration mess. When your message and the messages of hundreds, thousands, and millions of others are sent, any politician that doesn't listen will soon be out of a job.

Posted by: William Pflaum at February 14, 2007 12:31 AM

I am thoroughly disgusted that the good ol' United States does not enforce our immigration laws. I definitely do not want amnesty in any shape or form.
that will encourage even more illegals to break our laws and come to the USA. All illegals should be sent back from where they came. Let them come in the LEGAL way. We cannot afford all these illegals. If they do not like our laws, GO BACK FROM WHERE YOU CAME.
We should stop all immigration until we get our borders protected and the illegals here sent back,
then a minimum number can come the LEGAL way.
Babies born on US soil of illegal parents should not automatically become US citizens.
If we stopped all the "freebies" to illegals, they would not be interested in breaking our laws to come here.
NO MORE AMNESTY of any form.

Frank D. Russo, I came upon this story of the Horror of the House, Nancy Pelosi, while looking at another story on your site, it had nothing to do with The Minutemen. I happen to live across the bay from "San Francisco Values", and I say that in a derogatory way. I see what Democorats in this state government have done to California, and I'm not a Republican. Both parties have failed the citizens of this country, but I see Democrats as the party FOR illegal aliens. I do not find most of the comments here as NEGATIVE, I find them positive, that Americans are beginning to fight back against illegal immigration.

Beth, you don't fool me, as usual you try to call illegal workers "immigrant workers". I applaud any worker who is here legally, congratulations you did it the right way. Thank you ICE for doing your job. I hear complaints that Ice and police departments are upsetting those in communities who are "law-abiding undocumented immigrants". WHAT?? Now there's an oxymoron if there ever was one. Law-abiding and undocumented just don't go together. It's about time illegal aliens are afraid of ICE and the police! They have become complacent that MY government protects them.
Fool me once with amnesty to illegal's, they won't fool me twice!

Frank D. Russo I am not a MINUTEMAN or woman and I am disgusted with illegal immigration and Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi and the Catholic Church.
Why does the truth hurt you so much?

Posted by: Tammy at February 14, 2007 08:34 PM

I was a democrat for 35 years. I don't vote that way today. Illegals have turned nice towns into ghettos and the gangs have spread EVERYWHERE in California. The drug cartels have control of Maywood, Bell, Lynwood, Bell Gardens, and about four more towns in East Los Angeles. This isn't a conspiracy theory, this is fact! The Catholic Church encourages the illegals to cross our border and to have as many children as they can during their productive years. They are just like the politicians who want more votes, the church needs more people in their pews, while the American people pay the bill.

Sorry Beth, illegal aliens are not immigrants, they are foreign intruders. Why are you putting foreign criminals ahead of the millions of legal immigrants waiting outside the US for a green card?

Also what you support is discrimination based on national origin. See why here: wwww.legalimmigrantsfirst.org.

Why do you support discrimination and criminals?
Why not instead support the many thousands of people who follow the law but never get to set foot in the US, they die first because the waiting times are so long.

Some come here to be citizens, and some come here to be parasites on society.

Illegals are not citizens, and neither are there babies as the 14th amendment does not give automatic birthright citizenship, that is an illegal alien myth. Look up the Congressional Record on this amendment and you will see what the congressmen said about it. If you believe that Americans would give illegals citizenship rights then maybe you better read about the War of 1812.

The posts I read seem to be well-thought and pithy comments. Politicians believe that they have the God-given right to sell the USA for a pathetic vote that is self-serving to keep them in office and for their pathetic personal beliefs.

Legal immigrants are now and have always been welcomed here. But, not to be forced down our throats. We are NOT against the Mexican people. They are our neighbors and that is great. Don't make us enemies by amnesty. Let's help them by helping their country. Politicians should demand that their President Calderon take care of his citizens. Invest in Mexico instead of China and India...spread it around. Help our neighbors to help themselves.

What has happened to our OUR House? When did they stop serving and listening to their constituents, American citizens, and instead serve illegal persons from other countries?

Maybe they would notice us lowly Americans if we, the citizens, made a march on Washington D.C.. Do you think 12 million American flags would get their attention? How about 20 million American flags? Wow, that would be a beautiful sight to behold!

What do you think? I for one will be ready, willing and able to carry my flag to Washington. Any takers? Let's make a date.

Washington, here we come to keep our country for Americans and to preserve all that our forefathers fought so hard to preserve for us.

But Frank, I am from California and I have repeatedly noted that the democrat majority state legislature gets a great deal of reelection campaign cash from OUTSIDE the state; where is the consistancy?

Posted by: Sid at February 16, 2007 06:32 PM

By the way Frank, how can you assume your readers will find comments located here as negative unless you also assume this is a progressive/liberal/democrat "kumbaya" site and not one for intelligent debate?

Posted by: Sid at February 16, 2007 06:35 PM

Bill,LaDell, and all the rest of you who see the threat and have spoken out; God Bless You! I had been very saddened by what I see to be an apathy on the part of my countrymen and women to aggressively address the problem of the illegal Migration into my Country. With you speaking out on the blogs as you do you inspire others to be involved. The next step has to be an organized effort to March on Washington. Question is how to organize it and get it going. We have to pick a day, get the word out. Provide transport yo those who need. Really get this thing going.

I have deleted a posting promoting the Minutemen and a march taking place by a group that links to them. If you want to promote this kind of racist thinking, please do so on another site and stop misusing this one.

Posted by: Frank D. Russo at February 18, 2007 10:21 AM

And yet you promote Nacy Pelosi and her connection to the racist orgainization of La Raza which does not put American's first.

Posted by: Ann McNett at February 18, 2007 11:01 AM

Ann: I don't consider La Raza a racist organization. I'll post an article about hate groups in California tomorrow.

Posted by: Frank D. Russo at February 18, 2007 11:35 AM

The Latino organization to which Pelosi spoke in San Francisco assists immigrants with the many complexities of living in a new land.

Helping people find work and to get dignity on the job is an American value. So, too, is becoming a citizen and registering to vote. That is why Pelosi was joined at the SF event by a bevy of state and elected officials, as well as by religious leaders, clerics, and just good and caring people.

Ironically, immigrant bashing by former governor Pete Wilson and conservative groups has led to immigrants realizing the power of the ballot.

OK Frank,

I take back a great degree of your first amendment kudos that I gave you...

It is YOUR OPINION that the Minutemem are "racist". And you have deleted their opinions from any dialog. Now what does that make you?

At the very least it establishes this website as what I suspected, one to "kumbaya" with fellow liberals/democrats/progressives and to heck with any serious dialog. Congratulations, I guess you can't handle serious discussion/dialog and have crushed all opinions other than your own. Any similarities to any other repressive movements here? (Perhaps Bill Cavala's Nazis?)

You don't consider La Raza a racist organization? What do you think La Raza translated is anyway? It is "THE RACE", obviously with a Latino bent. So you may accuse others of racism (as they oppose your opinions) but you give credibility to an organization that has "The Race" in it's very title! Simply incredulous!

Mr. Burt, to become a citizen includes an understanding and respect for the law. By sheer squatters rights and crossing the border illegally, I don't see much respect for those laws. How do I know they will repect any other ones? How about ones proposed/passed by even a democratic majority government?

There are little if any "complexities" in living in a new land when you do it LEGALLY and via the citizenship process Mr. Burt. Obviously, if "immigrants" aka illegal aliens are having "complex" problems in a new land, it is because they are outside of any bonified citizenship process.

Look good and hard in the mirror tomorrow when you look at hate groups and the suspension of the first amendment Frank. Remenber Mr. Burt, LEGAL immigrants, once they become citizens do get to vote, but illegal aliens do not...

Sid: You have commented on just about every article I have written or others have for months and posted over 100 comments. The First Amendment gives you the right to set up your own website or comment elsewhere, but there is no requirement that I allows you to continue to insult me, tell me who I have to allow to use my site to comment and put forth your disagreement with just about everything on these pages.

I have given you a great deal of lattitude to speak your mind, but there comes a time where in my editorial discretion it is no longer useful to have to wade through your comments. You have refused to identify yourself and have hidden behind a wall of anonymity to constantly throw stones. If you want to call me a hatemonger, as you have, and other writers on this site, you can do so elsewhere, and not on my nickel.

Something we can all do to make our feelings known about lawmakers and businesses who put big business and profit ahead of the welfare of Anerican citizens.

Interesting that Mr. Russo tries to imply some lack of credibility by certain posters, because they are "from outside California", while at the same time defending people are "from outside California".
