Californians: Give Thanks If You Have Health Insurance and Protect Others Who Do Not

McGuire.gif

By Andrew McGuire
Executive Director,
Health Care for All-California

As we give thanks for our families and having health insurance, we must consider those less fortunate than ourselves. We have the responsibility to insure that everyone, regardless of age, race or employment, has quality, affordable healthcare.

The election results, dramatic as they are, do not move us a lot closer to universal healthcare. It is no secret that our healthcare system is in crisis. Millions of people suffer every day because they do not have adequate health insurance. In fact, the lack of health coverage is currently the 7th leading cause of death in the United States.

In 1995, a concerned group of Californians formed Health Care for All–California (HCA) to fix this problem. Since then, HCA has grown into a statewide network of 31 chapters with 28,000 members and supporters in nearly 400 cities around the state. The result of our efforts is Senate Bill 840, authored by Senator Sheila Kuehl which was recently passed by the California legislature. SB 840 is the solution to the healthcare crisis.

But SB 840 has faced opposition from powerful vested interests—the insurance and pharmaceutical industries. Bowing to their $4 million in campaign contributions, Governor Schwarzenegger vetoed this historic bill. Undaunted, Senator Kuehl will reintroduce the bill early next year, and Health Care for All–California will once again work hard to get it passed into law.

Our only weapon against the entrenched and wealthy opposition is a massive grassroots movement that cannot be ignored. To mobilize this movement, HCA has launched a statewide campaign called OneCareNow to support the new bill and obtain affordable, comprehensive health insurance for all. OneCareNow means one plan and one high standard of care for all Californians—full care, for all, for life, for less.

OneCareNow activities are already underway:

• Collecting a million signatures in a petition drive for Senator Kuehl’s bill.
• Distributing a new 22-minute video called “The Healthcare Solution: California OneCare.”
• Maintaining a new website and blog at OneCareNow.org where you can learn more about the campaign and the bill.

Most importantly, the OneCareNow Campaign features action events that promote and educate people about universal health insurance in a different city every day for a full year. The Campaign is supported by a coalition that includes the League of Women Voters, the California School Employees Association, the California Alliance for Retired Americans, and Health Access.

The first “day of action” was held in Morro Bay in San Luis Obispo County on August 12th. The final event will be in Los Angeles on August 12, 2007. Then, informed and motivated by these 365 events, people from everywhere in the state will gather in Sacramento on Sunday, August 19, 2007, for a huge rally—the largest demonstration in history in support of universal healthcare!

The California OneCareNow Campaign is the nation's first-ever statewide grassroots campaign for universal health insurance. Teams in more than 365 California cities are conducting grassroots educational and public awareness "action" events--one event per day, in a different city, for one year--to demand quality, affordable healthcare for all Californians. OneCareNow.org grassroots campaign is sponsored by Health Care for All - California. SB 840 is supported by a coalition of over 400 groups in California.
