California Elected Team Celebrates in Oakland Amidst Smiles and Tears of Joy

Garamendi, Chiang, McNerney, Bowen, Brown, and CDP Chair Torres Lay Out Plans for Future and Thank Volunteers

By Frank D. Russo

The pictures almost say it all, but the speeches were even more uplifting. With the victorious statewide Democratic candidates all assembled on the stage with local elected officials including incoming Mayor Ron Dellums, new Democratic Assemblymembers and exhausted and sometime teary campaign workers pinching themselves in disbelief, there was a magical moment this morning. When new Member of Congress Jerry McNerney, who ousted Republican incumbent Richard Pombo, arrived, the room exploded. With the news of Donald Rumsfeld's resignation and Democrats taking over the House with Nancy Pelosi as Speaker and on the cusp of retaking the Senate as well, the table was set.

Art Torres, the Chair of the California Democratic Party kicked off the hour of speeches by noting that the Republican ticket had not assembled in one place and kicked off an hour-long round of speeches.

We will share the speeches with you, after we catch up on our sleep. Here are some pictures.

That would have been a fun event to attend had I known about it. (Was it a public event?)

But then, doing so would probably make me more of a "groupie" than an "activist" and I need to catch up on my work to pay the bills today :-)

Congratulations to all of these winners!

There was defenitely a lot of energy and excitement.

Here are my impressions of the event:

Angelides' BIG MISTAKE

Well it truly was a great day for Democracy in California and across our nation. We've made incredible gains and started a new positive momentum. Too bad Phil Angelides didn't accept a brave offer by Controller Steve Westly to keep the Gubernatorial Primary clean and respectable. Though Angelides' decision to ignore Westly's positive campaign offer may or may not have had a decisive impact on his chances, Californians are certainly tired of wasted time and money being pumped into useless negative campaigning. Westly's positive offer was truly refreshing. One thing is for sure though, no one could have done more to support Phil Angelides and our Party's candidates than Steve Westly. After barely losing an extremely disappointing primary, Westly certainly stood tall in support of our shared Democratic values. It was great to see how he came FULL-TIME to Phil's side even as so many other Democrats simply disappeared. I want to thank Mr. Westly for helping to put forth a truly valiant effort to defeat our Bush-promoting, middle class bashing, immigrant disparaging Governor.

Steve Westly's actions (and not just words) will certainly be remembered should he ever again decide to go forward with public service aspirations. True Democrats always reward candidates who PROVE themselves loyal and unselfish, especially when it comes to relentlessly championing our mutual Democratic values.
