California Political News and Opinion for Sunday, October 29, 2006

By Frank D. Russo

The California Progress Report has selected, on a daily basis, headlines of news stories and editorial and opinion articles about California state politics and public policy from many different sources. As a feature, readers can click on the headline and read what interests them. As of Friday, we had logged 5200 news and 2904 opinion pieces, with the last 200 of each available for viewing. We are repairing the software for this feature which mysteriously stopped functioning sometime on Friday and deleted any items after last Wednesday.

Here is our substitute for some of what would have been our regular listing for today. For news, you may want to look at the excellent daily digest of mostly news articles compiled by Rough & Tumble. We'll highlight for now some opinion and other articles you may not see on other sites. We won't be able to update throughout the day as we normally do. But at least with the switchover from Daylight Savings Time we go an extra hour of sleep.

The designer of the California Progress Report, who is repairing the California News and Opinion sections of this page, told me when we started publishing in March, that most readers would think that these items appeared by some sort of automatic feed. That has never been the case and this process has involved reading about a dozen newspapers around the state and relying on other sources for additional items. We have strived to include articles, including opinion pieces we don't agree with, to give readers an opportunity to see what is being reported and commented upon throughout the state in the media. Today's list is necessarily shorter because of the extra time it takes to put in all the links. Enjoy!
