Why Jerry Brown Has So Much Law Enforcement Support for Attorney General

Latest Remark by Republican Opponent Poochigian On Cop Killing Rifles Draws Calls for Retraction

frankrusso-small.jpg

By Frank D. Russo

If you ever wonder why Jerry Brown, the Democratic candidate for Attorney General, has the lion’s share of law enforcement endorsements, take a look at Exhibit A: The comments his opponent made during a Sacramento Bee Editorial Board Meeting yesterday about his vote against outlawing 50 caliber bullet assault rifles.

One of the biggest bullets in the world, the 50 caliber rounds were designed to pierce armor from hundreds of yards away. Numerous demonstrations by the U.S. Marines and various police departments throughout the nation have shown this weapon to be devastatingly effective. Dozens of public policy groups and media reports have observed that .50 Caliber BMG Sniper Rifles could be lethal to innocent bystanders, police officers and even have terrorist application.

Bob Valladon, President of the Oakland Police Officers Association, called on Poochigian to retract these comments in which Poochigian "defended his vote, saying that at the time the rifles were legal in 49 other states."

Valladon minced no words. He said this was:

“Offensive to every police officer in California. His comments make it clear that he doesn’t have the judgment necessary to be Attorney General.

It’s incredible that Poochigian says we needed to wait for other states to act before taking measures to protect our own police officers. This is the worst possible kind of leadership and the sort of thinking that simply writes cops out of the public safety equation. California is a state that I am proud to say had the foresight to ban these dangerous weapons which can shoot bullets through two police cars and come out the other side and still kill an officer. The 50 caliber ban was signed by Republican Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and it is unfortunate that Charles Poochigian was so extreme that he would not support the rank and file police officers and that he was so extreme that he couldn’t even support his own Republican Governor on this important issue. Poochigian should immediately retract his comments and apologize to every police officer in California.”

It’s not just the hometown police in Oakland that are supporting Brown. Among others, he has the endorsement of the Fresno Police Officers Association, from the base of Poochigian’s Senate district.

Even before the latest Poochigian remarks, the Brown for Attorney General campaign had started running campaign ads highlighting the endorsement of Brown by California Police Chiefs and warning voters about Charles Poochigian’s record of being too extreme for California.

The first ad stars the President of the California Police Chief’s Assocition, Steve Krull who talks about why his organization endorsed Brown over Poochigian and points out Brown’s record of being tough on crime. It also highlights Brown’s overwhelming support from dozens of police associations, deputy sheriffs, police chiefs, and individual law enforcement officers across California. Steve Krull, President of the California Police Chiefs Association says, “When the California Police Chiefs decided to endorse a candidate for Attorney General, we interviewed both candidates –We looked at their experience and their records in Law Enforcement. And Jerry Brown is clearly the better choice for California.”

Polls have shown Brown leads Poochigian by over 20 points. Brown has $6 million in the bank. Since the last reporting period, Brown has continued to out-fundraise Poochigian by over a 3 to 1 ratio.

Jerry Brown is supported by law enforcement agencies across California including: California Police Chiefs Association, Peace Officers Research Association (PORAC), California Coalition of Law Enforcement Associations, Sacramento Police Officers Association, Sacramento County Sheriff, Modesto Police Officers’ Association, Contra Costa Deputy Sheriff’s Association, Madera Police Officers Association, Amador County Sheriff, Sierra County Sherriff, San Francisco Deputy Sheriffs Association, San Francisco Police Officers Association, Oakland Police Officers Association, Deputy Sheriff’s Association of Alameda Country, San Jose Police Officers Association, Marin County Deputy Sheriffs Association, San Mateo County Deputy Sheriff’s Association, Contra Costa County Deputy Sheriff’s Association, Deputy Sheriffs’ Association of Santa Clara County, Los Angeles County Police Officers Association, Los Angeles County Professional Peace Officers Association, Long Beach Police Officers Association, Association of Orange County Deputy Sheriffs, Huntington Beach Police Officers Association, Pasadena Police Officers Association, San Diego Police Officers Association, Deputy Sheriffs’ Association of San Diego County, San Bernardino County Safety Employees’ Benefit Association (S.E.B.A), Riverside Police Officers Association, Long Beach Police Officers Association, Fresno Police Officers Association, Kern Law Enforcement Association, Association for Los Angeles Deputy Sheriffs, Sonoma County Law Enforcement Association.

Looks like the train is leaving the station.

If Brown is so good then tell me why the murder rate in Oakland is thru the roof. Oh yes, don't park your car in Oakland as it will most likely be stolen. As for the 50 cal. gun.. I can do just as much damage with my 30 cal IF I had armor piercing amo as the military use which is illegal to own in ca. The 50 cal just goes out a bit further and faster. And folks you need to know that that gun has never (read my lips .. NEVER) been used in a crime in the US.

Nice column. Right on target. Hope Brown's campaign gets this information out far and wide to counter the Republican smear campaign. They're already blaming Brown for the fact that a prisoner in the 1970s was able to sell pornographic drawings. (I'm surprised they don't also blame Bill Clinton for that.) The next thing will likely be a "Willie Horton" ad. Fortunately, the voters aren't buying that GOP garbage. And by the way, someone should ask Chuckie about the NRA's refusal to support a ban on the sale of armor-piercing bullets. How's he feel about that?

The 50 BMG ban is smoke and mirrors. It makes the public feel good as it gives the appearance that something is proactively being done to combat terrorism.

Many of the same law enforcement agnecies that supported this ban have in their possession these 50 BMG rifles.

This weapon could have terrorist applications?

Come now just about any tool could have terrorist applications.

Are we going to ban box cutters? After all, box cutters were the tool of choice used to hijack the planes on 911.

As a California police officer, it makes me throw up in my mouth a little each time I see an ad that shows law enforcement support for Jerry Brown. The ONLY reason Police Officer Associations support Brown is because he is pro-labor unions (which police officer associations are). My own Association supports him (which has caused me and several other officers to withdraw all funds we formally donated to our Political Action Comittee), but none of my co-workers will vote for him...go figure. Jerry Brown refused to revoke the parole of convicted cop killers, he signed the "inmates bill of rights" (the reason California pays ten times as much money per inmate than other states), and he Vetoed a bill that would have provide the highest level ballistic vests to all cops in California....Oh yeah, and have we all forgotten Rose Bird!!!!

The biggest tragedy will be if Brown gets elected because misinformed voters believe that Police support Brown. Admnistrators and labor unions support Brown, COPS DO NOT.

Although there is always a gray area in politics, we have to draw the line somewhere. A guy like Brown, who refuses to prosecute cop killers to the full extent of the law , has no place being endorsed by police officers. Any cop who completely sells out and turns their back on our fallen brothers by endorsing or voting for Jerry Brown should be ashamed of themselves. Don't forget what's important guys, and please don't abandoned your morals.

I have been a Police Officer for over 30 years and had to work through the Jerry Brown/Rose Bird era. When I found out my association was backing Brown, I contacted the association president and asked why. I reminded him of Brown's lack of support to Law Enforcement during his time as Governor. The association president's response was Brown is good for associations (unions), not law enforcement. This disgusts me how law enforcement associations are going against the desire of their members, as all Police Officers I have contacted are NOT voting for Brown, that includes the association's president!!
I'm hoping that Police Officers get the word out that Law Enforcement, the officers on the street, do not support Jerry Brown, unions do.

Posted by: another disgusted officer at October 28, 2006 05:06 PM

I am glad to hear that actual Peace Officers do not support him.

Do not worry, whether or not he wins the election he will probably be declared ineligible, that is if the courts read and apply GC12503 properly.

Dear Anonymous Disgusted Police Officer,

It seems a little foolish to hysterically cut and paste your arguments directly from Poochigian's propoganda page without checking the facts. Brown is supported by every police officer association in California because he has the experience of working with law enforcement. Poochigian has no experience in this regard and he has done nothing to support cops, even stood with those who seek to remove our death and disability benefits.

You make your personal choice but we are standing with the candidate who stands with us.

There is no question that Jerry is the most qualified for the job.

Hey Disgusted,

Are you really calling
thousands of law enforcement officers liars?

Check out http://www.jerrybrown.org/node/306

Posted by: Scott Davila at October 29, 2006 04:25 PM

Scott,

No, I'm not calling them liars, I'm calling them sell outs. What's good for our bank accounts isn't always what's right. I go to sleep with a clear conscience. I suppose you jumped on the ol' elect Arnold bandwagon a while back too, and look how good that turned out for us. My own association gave Arnold upwards of $20K....and now we're throwing money at Brown. Meanwhile we just had an anniversary of the murders of one of our officers - I'd like to have someone in office who wants justice for him and his family. If that's wrong then I'll be wrong for the rest of my life.

Poochigian"s comment was stupid but so is Browns use of the 5.0 cal. BMG as an assault weapon. There are many calibers out there that could do the same thing if they were used with illegal armour piercing shells. This is just another scare tactic by Brown.

Curt -

Illegal armor piercing shells only apply to handguns... Thank your CA leg. for making gun laws easy to read and understand. You can have steel core bullets (armor piercing) for rifle calibers in CA, they are not illegal.

All -

I would go a step further... someone that has demonstrated that they will not prosecute any murderers (not just cop killers) to the fullest extent of the law has no business being Attorney General.

Additionally it really does look like any votes for Jerry Brown will be moot. Jerry Brown will likely be declared inelligible for the office of AG after the election. Siunce he has only been an active lawyer for the immediate 3 years instead of 5 as required by the eligibility requirements stated in GC 12503. So a vote for Jerry Brown in all likelyhood is a wasted vote.

Posted by: Mike Ras at November 2, 2006 07:17 AM

Mike, you're really burning the candle at both ends with that argument. The judge threw out poochigian's lawsuit. Sorry.

Posted by: G. Lopez at November 3, 2006 01:05 PM

Frank Russo is stupid. 50 BMG rifles are not "Cop killing rifles" as he calls them. Since they are not designed for or used for killing police in the USA, they should not be described as such. They are also not one of the biggest bullets in the world. 12 slugs are much larger, as are the bullets used in 60 and 70 caliber rifles.

While there have been a few cases of 50 BMG rifles used in violent crime, no one has ever been murdered by one i the USA, and no 50 BMG rifle has been used in a violent crime in California. The CA 50 BMg banned was voted in by people who hate gun owners and want to simply make gun ownership illegal in this country.

50 BMG rifles have been around since the 1920, and the 50 caliber sporting rifles have been popular for the last 25 years or so; terrorists seem to be rather resistant to using them in this country. The sporting rifles were designed and itended for civilian use (targets and hunting), it was only later just prior to Desert Storm that they were deemed suitable for military use.

There are lots of stupid people who will believe Russo's comments here, but I am not one of them.
