California Assembly Passes Universal Health Care Insurance Bill on Party Line Vote

By Frank D. Russo
The California State Assembly has just passed SB 840 by Senator Sheila Kuehl on a straight party line vote with only Democrats in support and Republicans opposed. The final vote in the 80 member Assembly was 43 to 30. Every California resident would be covered for medical insurance.
The measure no heads back to the State Senate for concurrence in amendments made in the Assembly where passage is all but assured in light of the previous passage by the Senate 25 to 15. It then heads for the Governor who has not weighed in on SB 840 and has said he will make a proposal in 2007 if he is reelected.
The debate followed predictable lines with Republicans claiming it amounted to government controlled medical treatment and Democrats indicating the bill allows all patients to chose their treating physician and will be paid for out of savings of resources wasted on administrative overhead, estimated by Assemblymember John Laird to be in excess of $25 billion in California.
Additional events are scheduled on the steps of the Capitol and in Los Angeles on Wednesday and more will be forthcoming as proponents of the measure ramp up a campaign to secure the Governor’s signature. Interesting how the Republicans want us citizens to subsidize "cheap" labor for business, but don't want to provide the people who pay the bill with affordable access to medical services. We are fast becoming like our neighbor to the South, with a huge peasant class ruled by the elite.

Life would be so much better in California if we could get the insurance companies out of the health care business. They have no place being there and cause 99% of the problems associated.

This is a ridiculous blanket bill that California cannot afford. It will bankrupt this state and hurt current health care providers. This issue should only be considered by the U.S. Congress.
It also expands health care coverage for illegal aliens and their dependents who shouldn't be here in the first place. This will only encourage more of them to come to California.

This is a Bill that if signed by the Governor, will cause me to leave CA.
We need to ask ourselves; Why are Emergency Rooms closing?, Why does it take so long to see my Dr.? Why do I have to wait for treatments to be scheduled? Do you think increasing the number of patients through "free" health care will ease these problems?
Look at the health care mess in Canada, Norway and others that have Universal Health care. This is what California will become!
