WHY THE CALIFORNIA HIGH SCHOOL EXIT EXAM WORKS

hello there! I am a student of 2006 and graduate from Soul. I am one of the student that did not pass the high school exam! I took classes and study the book to help me pass the test but then i try since my 10th grade and never pass both!

I have sat and listen to this stuff about how this test will help students to be prepared for the work force.
how can it help them when they fail the first time.they are not given the chance to study the part they missed.the test is just given again.do you realize how many of these students in the poor schools.who have worked hard.to get to their senior year,who did not drop out,or joined gangs and to hear everyone say you can do it well they tried and worked hard only to be told you did not do well so you wont be graduating with your class or not until you pass the test.plus do you people know if any of these students had any medical
problems and when they were to attend summer school to help them that due to doctors appts.they were kicked out
of summer school because they missed 3 days. and when the parnets called to explained they were brushed off.I am a firm believer in education,but your theory on this test is wrong.there has been many students who have graduated without this test and went on to good careers,and to serve this country and lost their lives.
so please can someone tell me why kids in poway,san marcos can pass with an grade avage of 1.85 why is that,maybe its because their parnets have money to support their schools. and the kids in san diego unified does not and half of the teachers really dont care if these students learn, or not as well as your counslors.I feel very strongly that this test was only a set up to make these students who are spanish,african-americans fail.did George washington,the kenndeys,or Dr.king if these people have taken your test and failed
then i guess they would have not been great leaders.

I guess back in 1999 you became God! YOu might think this is a good idea, but as a parent its not. Not everyone can take test. Why not work harder on getting our teachers paid better so they will teach better. A child might have trouble learning because the teacher has to teach 40 students and they can't take the time to make sure EVERYONE understands before moving on. To many things are now based on test scores. As if the SAT and all the other test taken to go to college now you have to pass a test to graduate. I think you are wrong and you have ruined many kids lives. Your "great" idea has made kids drop out of school because of this and made them feel like failures. You think its great because only 10% have failed but thats 10% to many, once again we reward those who are smarter and have no problem taking test.
Of course the teacher are behind it because not they are not accountable for not teaching properly, it doesn't matter if you have a bad teacher it only matters that you pass the test!
I hope it is over turned for the kids sake! The smart kids will still go on to college they lives will move forward as always with no problem but by getting rid of this test it a chance to thsoe other 10%.
If you want to make students take the test give it to the ones that don't care that get f's and are just there because they have to be!Give them the test to see what they are learning but leave the onces that are trying alone!

I, myself came to this country not knowing a word of english. After three years being in the country, I faced myself taking the CAHSEE and had no problem passing the first time. People don't understand that this test wasn't created to bring people's self esteem down, and if it did, maybe they should just try harder. Those people who let the test result dissapoint them and bring them down, are just not strong, and if they drop out of school for that reason, then they will always give up on everyting that they do and will never succeed. I think the test is a good idea, why would anyone want to go to school in the first place without learnig anything, if they are not willing to learn and don't want to take the test, then maybe they shouldn't go to school and do something else with their life.

thank you for creating the test. upon taking it in 10th grade i passed it easilly and was on the band wagon that it should be abollished because it was like taking the 6th grade over. to answer the past few people's questions. its not to help them prepare for the work force, its to make sure they have the basic skills. im sorry but if you cant do the basic pre-algebra than they wont let you work at mc donalds....maybe they'll let you clean the toilets. besides i was sitting next to a couple of guys that were stoned out of their minds and they passed. i fell asleep in the test and woke up and still finished!!! so to all those people saying that you think that your god or some such bull. thank god they aren't gunna be working on anything immportant.
by the way im not an A student i barely passed my requirements for graduation but the HSEE was easy.

i dont like the exit exam i am in my jr year and i dont want to stress out in my senior year to take it i have 2 tries a year and i didnt even pass it i mean the english part is easy but the math part it wont even let u pass by just 1 point that is not even right so yes they need to stop it because it is very stressful.....!!!!!!!!!

Seriously, you have to be a fucking moron not to pass the CASHEE. If you dont know how to add and multiply by the 12th grade, nor do you know what a noun is, you dont deserve to graduate. Honestly! i Think this test Was Really Rediculous! it makes no sense after all these years you want to bring this test back as a requirement! to senior students!! after all these years!! i just just recently completed all my courses that were reqrd. and passed all my classes. I've passed the test. This test was pure bullshit. It was pretty simple, but just because it was simple to me(or others), doesn't mean it's simple to everyone else, and there is alot of people that don't understand this shit that are being denied diploma's.
Theres people that try really hard that haven't passed it, and theres others that just don't care, and just took it because they had to. I don't think just one test should judge whether students should graduate or not. I think it should be based on the students grades.

I took the test the very first time and actually passed it. It was really easy, and no one should fail it! I was born in mexico, and enlgish is my second language, and on top of that the high school were i graduated has the worst fame because of its troublemakers! alot of gangs and lots of trouble! but that didnt stop me from not focusing in graduating! This test is 60%, basically if you get straight D's you could pass it! its not that hard! If i passed it, obiously everyone can do it! its all to you!!!

I graduated in 2006 and i was in a newer school that is about 40% hispanic and not meaning to sound racist, but most of the hispanic population in my town doesnt speak english or speaks very little english. My school was well funded and had many classes teaching english to hispanics and many spanish classes. I have terrible in math my whole life, i failed algebra one b my freshman year and barely passed it my sophmore year. then i went on to pass geometry my junior year(most people take this freshman year or sophmore year) and half of algebra 2 with a low d my senior year(then u dropped it because i would have failed if i didnt). So to say teh test is unpassible is bullshit. They give you something like 9 oppurtuinites to pass the test, and they give u study guides to help you pass the test. I have never really been a good test taker in school either and i didnt study with teh study guides they gave me and i still scored like 50 points over what u need on one and 120 over what u need on the other. So their is no excuse to not pass this middle school based test. To kazuoa, the reason you didnt pass probably is your grammar. Read your sentences they are horrible, you are missing words and your grammar is wrong. Some of my freidns failed the test the first and we all made fun of them because of how easy it was. The state just cant give out diplomas to under qualified students that are going to be working on important tasks that could impact the community. A diploma has to mean somehting and be worth something because the cost of the ink and paper it was printed on. I dont know wabout you guys but i want qualified to be working with me and in my community.

hello everyone i did this exam 4 times already i have a LOT of trouble on math but on English i did very well. My problem's is that i see my friends crying there hearts out on this test. This is a very stressful for me because this test scares me because i have the fear i will not pass because of my learning problem i have with math. I have used all your programs u give us to past the test i study my heart out on the 2 mouths before the test began and yet i still not have past it this will be my last chance on making the test to the reqierments
i fear i will not pass but i will try my best on the test like all the other times.
i have always gotten good grades i have never gotten any fails in my life.

I think the CHSEE is not the right thing because there is a lot of people that try so hard to pass and can't make it and they have to repeat until they get it that is not right thing to do i think this is some shit about the CHSEE we have to get the deploma by passing all of out classes and have to have 3.0 to get the deploma i thank that is the right thing to do. please do something about this thing because it is not right

We live in Iowa, a state that doesn't require an exit exam to graduate, and we just want to say stop complaining. An 8th grade level test shouldn't be a problem for seniors. After all, you passed those grades, right? Or you found a sneaky way around the system. We think exit exams are a good idea because if you're going to get a diploma and move on into the real world, you should at least know the basics. At our school, some people at the top of our class are there because they take blow-off courses and never apply themselves to anything challenging or beneficial. Not that those classes are bad in any way, but some advanced classes like upper level math, English, and science, are important in the real world. We're just saying, its a really good thing California has this idea, look at your silver lining once and a while!

And on a side note, every single thing we read on this blog was so appallingly written, we're not surprised you failed the English section of the exam. Stop writing in computer lingo, you don't come off as professional.

I know that Mr. O' Conner that you believe the test was a good idea but for some of us it was really difficult. I for one was a really good student and did try hard in school. When your test came a long it shocked me and my class mate that we had to pass the test to graduate. This news hit me like a block of wood to the face. I mean how can the State do this to is when all our lives we have been fighting to get into high school. It really made me angry and I was thrown off because of the test.
Again a lot of people may say that it is easy but for some of us the test was a real challenge. When I failed the math part of the test three times i felt like such a dumb ass and a loser. It was like my life was being taken away from me. Luckily the test was postponed until 2006. So I graduated with the class of 2004. I am not proud of myself for getting lucky because I feel for those that have the fate of not being able to go to college and starting their lives as a college student. So I have to say that the Exit Exam was shitting and such a bad side stab on those students that tried so hard and still did not pass. So I'm going to say this that YOU SUCK! I know that I tried and you almost ruined my life BASTARD! MIND your own shit and STOP trying to hold us immigrants behind.

I don't think we have to take this test because it's really not necessary. we go to school for 12 years.We are recuard to take 260 units.

Come on, it's not like a 5th year of high school is the only option. There are plenty of adult school/community college options for those who need to improve their skills. Be warned however, that if you can't pass the exit exam you would most likely assess into the lowest possible community college course and probably fail it, so adult school might be a better option.

Case in point: I know a girl who effortlessly passed the exit exam on her first try. She still assessed into pre-algebra at when she started community college after having passed algebra 1 and geometry.

Well, where do I start. In my opinion these test are biased, just as many other tests are. How could you measure success on a test. There are so many factors involved when taking test that may include anxiety, health, language, etc. Many english language learners will not have the opportunity to pass this test because of the language barrier. It is not to say that they are not capable, smart enough, etc. All I have to say is that there will be many students who will not receive their high school diploma because of this test. In many cases they do have the grades, but just cannot pass the test. Not knowing what to study after having failed the test can confuse many students and educators alike. There has to be a better solution to the problem. I plan to lobby against this test because it is not fair for many students. It may be telling students that they are not good enough and they should go to other extremes to make it in this competive world, which may include illegal activity. But we will see what the consequences will be as more and more students fail the exit exam.

Remember, the Gap between the rich and the poor keeps widening, and this test will contribute to this even further....

Not everybody is passing CAHSEE i was one of them. Until now i couldn't pass it, so i decided to drop out and moved to adult school. I did get all of my credits it was so unfair that i have to wait 2 months to get my results then another 2 months just to schedule my CAhsee. Same thing in public high school if you didn't pass it in 10th grade then take another test on your 11th grade. See how hard this test are espcially when your bilingual.

I passed the English awhile back and just recently got my results for my math 350 is passing I had a 340. I am about half way done through my alegreba which is my last class. Now I can't walk like I wanted I have to wait another year like always another year. This works? What the kids who are very intelligent bust their butt academically but don't do well on tests or these kinds of test for that matter? They don't get to walk with their friends if they don't pass? They get told no, you did well up until this point but this test tells you your still not good enough by the state's standards. This test should be based on where to help the individual what do they need help in and where they stand academically not whether or not they get to graduate. It's not fair and you didn't ask the students if they wanted this you demand that we take it. We have a voice and pretty soon it will be heard because this is...B.S. flat out plain and simple it's not fair and because of that I can't walk so I give up I'm going to reduce my classes and go back to working because I stopped thinking I would have been able to do this but I was let down. im in my senior year, and i had just found out that i failed by two! math isnt my easiest and it never will be. but that doesnt mean u have to keep my diapolma a way from me. i didnt drop out of highschool i worked really hard on all of my projects and homework but this test is what is holding me back. its worhtlesss. do to u are suffering the kids. its not our faults the teachers are the ones that are suppose to keep up and make sure EVERYONE understands not just the ones that move on quickly. when i had taken it lastyr there was a boy that had adhd and he was alowed to us a caculater... but those with no disabilities are not. i feel this is totally out of my leg and i honestly do not want to go back during my life and try to pass a test when i can be going to college and becoming a nurse. thats my life dream. but this tet is what is holding me back. my brother got to pass highschool and he didnt do his end of the yr project and they didnt have the exit exam. and hes doing just fine. i feel you the people that decided apon this should have gotten us kids better educated and helped us then throwing us in the coner not having extra help. its just way too unfair

Ok so according to everyone out there the high school exit exam is a bad thing. that is singles out the poorly educated and puts pressure on districts and teachers to actually care and work with students that do not pass the first time they take it. i applauld mr.O’Connell. I am a Graduate from the class of 2006. I took this test that has critics raging. i grew up in a district that recieved very little recognition, and very little funding. the district i daresay has since then improved for the better. however i started in kindergarten right up to my senior year in high school i was fortunate enough to grow up in one school system, so i saw the changes. in my opinion the exit exam is very easy. to be honest i hate math i guessed on the entire math portion and still passed!!! what has me confused is the critics are focusing on the state is only pointing out the poor students. well isnt that what is needed ? districts that mattered very little to the state are getting the extra help they need, discticts are putting more pressure on the teachers to actually teach the fundamentals that can branch off into any career or subject. students who cannot afford to pay for expensive tutors or private lessons in an tutoring center such a sylivan . are getting the help right inside their classrooms! FOR FREE! what could not be better then that?

I can't that you made this test should a big deal I am one out have many student in the class of 2007 that has not passed i have study my ass of a sat in class and listen to the teachers about this. I am also in SDC which stands for special day class which has kids with learning disabilty and how can you point and pick how get a diplomen and who doesn't because of his/ or her disabilty. you are one really mess up guy i bet half the school borad could not pass this test.

I am a parent that is against the Exit Exam for many of the disadvantage students male and female. My opinion is that this test is designed to fail them. How are you going to teach young children to comprehend reading when their parents cannot read to them? The parents have failed the children. Society has contributed to the illiteracy of the parents for many years by enabling them to function at this level.
For many years the children have been passed from one grade to the next, with minimal reading skills, when a instructor decides that a student is unapproachable to teach or do not want teach the child because of their physical appearance, and or their mental capacity. What happened is, colleges started complaining about young people not knowing how to read and write, but they not understanding the reason behind it. All that professor is knowing that the student is a high school graduate. This is the reason for the High School Exit Exam.
So you have the children paying the price for the teacher's and the illiterate parent's or a parent who do care one way or another, or a young parent, who have no education themselves and do not know anything about teaching their children the basic's in the home. The child has come to a critical point in life, she or he is now failing the Exit Exam, which is holding them back from graduating. Should this continue? Is the State willing to revise the curriculum to include the Exit Exam preparation, within the class schedule so that these students will be able to pass the test in order to graduate? Would it be a wise choice to consider? There are students of all nationalities who are failing the Exit Exam. You have the adminstrators, lobbyists, instructor's and those who prepare these test, they need to come together and find a more beneficial solution and or other option for all students to pass the Exit Exam so that they too can become successful people in life.
We need student to graduate, not turning their lives towards criminal activity, dropping out of school, high pregnancy rates, drug activity, more school assaults because of pressure and etc.

i hate you so much you ruiened my life just like miguel. becouse of our test i have to work 2 jobs i work 57 hours a week to pay bills and rent. i was a good kid never got into trouble had a's and b's had a 3.6 gpa i could have been a architect now i work for them building their desinges i wish you could feel the pain and suffering you coused me.

I am amazed beyond belief at the illiteracy and inability of expression displayed in these posts. It's no wonder why so many of you failed the HSEE. Nevertheless, I cannot solely blame the students for the lack of basic education skills so clearly displayed in this arena. Truly, the parents and teachers should be held accountable for not doing the job that they chose. Parents chose to have these children and teachers chose to be the educators; and both have failed miserably. Students are not completely free of culpability as they have the choice of doing homework, studying for tests, and asking for help if they are not comprehending the material. In my opinion, everyone is given the opportunity to learn, study and pass the exit exam. It is your individual choice if you think that studying and preparing for your future is a waste of time. Unfortunately, most of you take for granted the help that teachers and parents offer you and don't realize until it's too late. You can all play the blaming game until you run out of people to blame. One day you will have to grow up and take responsibility for your own life and your future. Until then, shut up and stop blaming everyone for your lack of work and ambition. You have nobody else to blame but yourself if you let the past rule your future.

u kno what mr i dont like u and i will never will like because i took this stupid test seven times!!!!!!!!!! i did it 4 times with modification and 3 times with out it!!!!!!!!!!! and i even though i pass the math part of this stupid test!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and i didn't pass the english and this with modification and i still think that this test is a waste of time u evil person!!!!!!!! oh and by the way my friend who took it and passed it the frist time still feelsstrongly about this stupid test. this test is a waste of our time and puts a lot of stress on us kids with this test and with our other cources!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i am one kid that tried and tried to pass the math portion. i finally did but the whole point is that there are other kids that have a horrible time. they might have not gone to a normal high school like me. i went to a continuation school. they try to help less there because all us kids went there because we did something bad or wrong a the high school it is not hte fault of the students but the schools that we have been to!!

I do not see any good points in Mr. O's exam. I'm an immigrant too. It seems CASHEE is a very discriminatory exam specially trying to exclude Blacks, Latinas and Asians from the good paying job or just a good life.

CASHEE also prevents children with learning disability to have any further education. I'm sure this guy knows that math and english is not a survival skill for life. All those celebrities and singers do not use math or english to get the millions. Still there are many who are starving even with the knowledge of english and math. Why should you enforce unneceassr exam on kids and make students', teachers and parents life miserable?

You should give the exit exam to all the teachers, and any who don't pass should be fired.

There are plenty of college graduates wanting to get into the teaching field who would be happy to take one of the vacant positions.

The teachers who posted here spell as poorly as the kids who posted here, and/or hit the "Post Comment" more than once, indicating computer illiteracy as well.

To the kids who passed regardless of lack of skills, congratulations. You're just like all the others before you who graduated without skills. Hooray.

To the teachers who can't spell and don't know basic computer skills, please go back to college or do some home study, then get into a different line of work that doesn't involve influencing our youth.

You can succeed and make a lot of money at a profession if you have skills, whether or not you did well in high school or obtained a college degree - I'm living proof of that. But for crying out loud - learn how to spell!

This test is a ridiculous waste of taxpayer dollars.

I don't know why so many people are against this test. It was actually a really simple exam that tested the skills that were basically installed in you since the 8th. Besides, it's not like the state only gave students one chance to pass the test, it's the students fault if they keep failing because they're not learning from there pass mistakes. If the test said that you passed the English section, but failed the math, than work on your math so that the next time the test is taken than your probability of passing will rise.

I have always had problems in math, but I was able to pass this test with flying colors on my first try with plenty of time to spare. Many of the students that I've talked too actually thought it was a waste of time due to the fact that they gave us to much time to complete the test. I must agree that it was unfair to those few who missed passing by a few points, but in this very completive world, students should have all the the advantages and education the our country has to offer and if by giving us this test proved that we are slightly prepared than I say "Bring on the CASHEE!"

hey im a sophmore about to take the exit exam i am really nervous about why they have to create that test

my son just "graduated" two days ago. he worked hard, for 13 years. my younger son has already passed the test. my older son has passed the engish portion. he has taken the math portion six times, not yet passed. they no longer hand out diplomas at graduation, just empty diploma covers, whats up with that. all three of my children have/had learning disabilities. my yongest son was the one who overcame the quickest, he has passed the exam and will be a senior next year. but my oldest, faced with his future and not knowing what it will hold, he will not find out until july whether or not he has passed the math portion of the test that he took in may. when he showed up at the high school on friday to pick up his diploma, he was told to just wait until you find out if you pass or not then come back, while all around him other graduates were given their diplomas, how do you think he felt. he was given the test twice during his sophomore year BEFORE he had taken algebra, which is included in the test, the school decided that because of his disability, that he would be better off if he waited and took a less difficult math class until he imporoved his skills. my son was exited from special ed before he started high school, despite mine and my husbands wishes because he was not as qualified as other students for help. yet he was moved on, and the struggle began. every time he took the test he came closer and closer until he was within ten points of passing the test, he took the test in may, his final chance to pass, he will not find out until july, if the school sends him notice. until then, he has been told he can take adult classes at the high school, not his school, another in town. what child, going thru the stages of graduation wants to go back to high school and take more classes while his friends are going off to college, my son is depressed beyond description. not once did the school contact us with ways to help him pass, they did , however tell us of a class after school where he could study, little did they tell us was that it was in the same room with the kids who were serving detention, one teacher, twenty four kids, not exactly a prime place to study for a test that will decide your future. you know, they say that they want kids to be better educated to enter the world, stay off welfare, we tell them from birth that if they work hard stay true that they can do anything they want ,, what do i say to my son now, oh, im sorry baby, i know you worked your tail off but you cant have what you want? all this test does is tell kids that it doesnt matter, either youve got what it takes or you dont. a lot of other areas you can take a ration, an average, and base opinions of how successful something is, but not with our children! so what if 90, 93,98 percent are passing, what about the others, what do you do with them, the last thing they want after working so hard for thirteen years is to go back to high school, remedial? look that up in the dictionary and youll see a picture of a child having his face slapped by the state of californias eduactional system! my son knows what he wants to be, he has goals and has since he was a freshman, what do i tell him now? he wants to go to college, he wants to work, hes been told that he will never accomplish this if he doesnt pass this test,, those are the kinds of educational people that should never set foot in a high school. if the state and leaders want the children to accomplish better educational goals, then perhaps they should look at the teachers, look at how they are teaching our kids, my son was taking two, yes two math classes to pass this test, his counselors advice? go to after school classes and take more math classes and study more, my son, as he put it, mom im so burned out, im working for nothing,i get closer and closer, no one helps me. what about him,, what do i tell my son. well, california, thankyou for letting my son, and many other children down, look at yourself, your leaders, your teachers, mabey you should look at who is teaching our children, perhaps they are the ones who need to be tested,,thanks a lot

MY SON ,WHO WAS SUPOSED TO BE GRADUATING THIS MONTH AFTER A VERY LONG AND HARD ROAD TO HIS SENIOR YEAR, WILL NOT BE GRADUATING WITH HIS CLASS. HE DID NOT PASS THE MATH PART OF THE EXIT EXAM THE FIRST TIME AND SO THE SECOND OPPORTUNITY HE WAS GIVEN DIDENT ALLOW FOR ENOUGH TIME TO GET THE RESULTS. THE GRADUATION WILL BE OVER BY THE TIME WE EVEN KNOW IF HE PASSED. I AM SICK TO SAY THE LEAST!!!! EVERY INVITATION THAT COMES IN THE MAIL FOR HIS FRIENDS AND FAMILY WHO ARE GRADUATING MAKES ME BURST INTO TEARS BECAUSE IM THE ONLY ONE WHO KNOWS HOW HARD THIS KID HAS WORKED TO GET WHERE HE IS AND TO NOW JUST BE LEFT IN THE DUST. MY HUSBAND AND I BOTH GOT OUR GED AT AGE 18 AND WE ARE MILLIONAIRS TODAY. It seems to me like now a days we tend to find something or someone to blame for not succeeding in life.

Take responsibilities for your own actions. Stop blaming an 8th grade test for working 2 jobs.

If you can't pass an 8th grade exam, trust me, there is no need for you to be an ARCHITECT. I much rather have my house standing than collapsing after a storm thank you very much.

And for those of you who talk about minorities and how it's hard to pass because your a minority....YOUR WHAT'S WRONG WITH AMERICA!!!!

I'm a Latina, and english was my second language, and I was raised by a single mother who worked two jobs AND I lived in the projects! And guess what?? I still managed to pass my exit exams, even after working after school at a fast food restaurant. So stop with the whinny crap and instead of complaining DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!!! Adapt and overcome!!!

Students that have a legit learning disabilities have an excuse, what's yours? Stop using being a minority as one, find a better one!

This is absolutely crazy!!! As a mother of a child to be a senior this year, I think this exit exam is WRONG!!! He has grown with ADHD all his life and has a very low self esteem!!!! He has been to summer school and now will be going to night school just to get his credits, why add to it?? I was talking with one of his friends the other night whose father just comitted suicide and he graduated this year but says "I only got a certificate, not a diploma because I am stupid".. How do you honestly feel that this is right? I am a strong believer in my children getting the fullest education possible and never missing school and I know that even with your exam my other two children would pass when they get to that point in life but come on...There are alot of learning disabilities in this world and you are NOT helping them but only making them feel that they really AREN'T as good as the other kids!! With the suicide rate the way it is this could only add to it with youngsters so stop playing GOD and start paying your teachers and staff better and that in itself might improve the education of our children!! I don't know what else to say but I just wonder why these kids are striving to complete high school and even senior projects just to be shot down over an extra test that you choose to throw at them!! IT'S JUST NOT RIGHT!!

Students that did not pass the exit exam are stupid because it was so easy. i pass the high school exit exam with my eyes close.

Dear Mr. O’Connell,

We are in 21st century and we must appreciate the impact education has had in our civilization. Most people do no work because they have to, but because they must. To purify gold, it must pass through fire. It is only with fire that we can have pure gold. It must be tested.

One thing our citizens must appreciate is that, this Exam is not only testing the student, but also the teachers and the whole educational system. Students in other countries takes standardized national exams, not only in English and Mathematics, but also in more that six other subjects. This ensures that teachers and other educational staff are doing the work they are paid to do. If a student can pass the exam prepared by the teacher, but cannot pass a standardized exam, there is something amiss with our education system.

The main problem with CAHSEE is that it tests High school students on junior high and middle school knowledge level. This is not benefiting our state at all. Let the students take standardized exam to measure their understanding of knowledge gained in high school. This will make the exam more valuable to the students and employers.

Man because of this test i didnt graduate i didnt even walk the stage and i didnt get my diploma after my four years of hard word and at the end a test comes to change all that you know thats not fair for those who didnt pass it by doing this you guys make other students do some stuff that they werent going to do after high school specilly those who didnt pass it

Does anyone honestly think he is reading these comments? anyone? Because he hasn't posted anything at all. Nothing. Not even a basic political statement like "to those of you that passed congratulations and to those of you that didn't keep trying!"

He doesn't care. if he did, he would be working to find out why students are getting to/through high school without basic math or english skills. Yes, I agree, students should be held to some sort of standard when graduating, but if 1 in 10 students are not passing, what does that say? What about the students who spend 12 years in public schools and aren't given the help they need to pass? What about the students who enter school at age 15 and know very little english, and are then expected to pass an English language proficiency exam without proper support?

Hopefully these standards will show how terrible our education system has become. Hopefully schools will start getting the money they need to bring up these scores and give students the education they deserve.

Either way, everyone posting on this board is either close to or over 18 years old, so take your opinions, take time to look at our government and vote! That's at least one way a voice can be heard in this sea of argument.

Congrats to those deserving students who passed. The test was designed to test 7th grade Math and 10th grade English. Hahaha what a joke. My 11 year old niece could pass that!

It needs to be made more difficult. If they are getting a high school diploma then they need to have 12th grade skills.

This test has nothing to do with race and has everything to do with ability. Why should we let you pass simply because you are not white? NOW that is racist and offensive.

I agree with you on the basis that a high school diploma should mean something to society. The high school diploma may not be for everyone. A graduate student from a high school should be at that level. The test is a way measuring up.

One of my question is that if a high school senior who has satisfied all the requirements of admission application to a university, for example, UC system, and is accepted by the university. Why does she or he still need to take a high school exam?

At first when i was a sophomore having to take the test i honestly said it was the most stupid thing ever. Because each student had work sooo hard to get to high school and now they have to work harder and harder...

Well i'm a junior at irvine high and i believe that the test is VERY FAIR! Each student has to learn and the knowledge has to stick with them, it can not go in one ear and out the other. Teachers are not baby sitters! its the students job to learn, its ther job to comprehend what the teacher is saying. If you want a person to make sure your kid is learning; hire a damn tutor then.

When i graduate, i will feel sooo good because i passed high school, and i passed the CAHSEE and i know for a fact i had learn somehting. NO PARENT would understand until they take the class. Imagine a hard working student who passed the exam with flying colors and yet someone who work hard just as well, but not hard enough, failed and still get to graduate. You will feel that it is unfair, because as a student you went above and beyond to get the grade you earn and the diploma you earned and they didn't even try.

Mr. O'Connell, I personally am getting involved now. My son has learning disabilities, but an IQ above average. He is dysgraphic and although having some of the most creative stories in his mind, he will never be able to create a grammaticallly perfect essay. I am not saying that he can't learn, he just learns differently. He goes to school, he earns his credits, if he does not pass this test, you will crush his spirit, just like you are crushing the very spirit out of some very gifted students, just not gifted in the areas that you are setting for them. Do you realize that Einstein might not have passed your little test? I'm sorry, but all of you that are complaining about not passing this test are stupid. If you could not pass that test, you really are not ready for college or even prepared to go start working anywhere except Burger King, and even then I would be wary of hiring you. The test was so easy my mentally redarded 10 year old brother could pass it blindfolded! Maybe you should stop picking your noses like he does and pay attention in class.

The high school exit exam is based on 8th grade math and 10th grade english. Students should be able to pass the test. The problem is not that these kids are dumb, but the school district is stupid for not trying hard to teach these kids earlier in life. Now after 11 years or so of education without the proper teaching methods many student do not know simple math or english. The government needs to stop wasting money on the war, and focus on the future of our nation. Our nation is our future students. All students should pass the test not only one or two.

No Offense, but the highschool exit exam is an okay idea. I mean, you can pass your classes, but you can always cheat your way to passing your classes. You can copy, and all the other things. Theres many ways where you can pass your classes. The HIgh School exit exam is just based on what you learn. It just testing you and what your learning. If you are learning these things at school, then you should beable to pass it, right? So stop complaining.

Hello my name is nick I go to one of the best public school systems in California. A Top ten Blue Ribbon school. I maintain above a C average and cannot pass this CAHSEE - this test has created more chaos in my life then imaginable. I have studied that book like no other and when it comes down to the exam I can't seem to crank it out. If i proceed to do well in school and keep my grades up and letter in 4 varsity sports why is it that i can;t pass this test? Is it necessary ? ..... NO!!! I am now a senior and have one more chance to take it and have spent Four Years of my life going to high school working my butt off-And to be told I cant graduate after all my hard work because of this 1 test created by Mr.Jack is unfair.

what is the point of this Exit Exam? So what we have only had this test for about 9 years or so, and are you saying that before this test was given out, that the people before us, are they not efficient enough? How are we any different? I will be the first person in my family going to college and because of this test ( math) I will not be getting my diploma. I have never passed a math test in my life, i could never do math. And because of this stupid test, you base my education off of it? Myself and including all of the teachers at my high school say that there is no point to this test. I took the exam 3 1/2 years ago, and I was in the class of 2006. I passed both math and English. I did poor on the writing, and luckily I did well in the multiple choice part. The math section was my highest, and scored a 400.

I think I see why the purpose for this test. College English is hard as hell for me. I have problems putting thoughts in a writing test. I went to a community college, and its like high school all over again. I'm still in a low level English class, and struggling. My high school English teacher didn't really teach shit, all they do was look that I did the essay and gave me full credit. I didn't have any feedback about grammar, and some awkward structure. This test is to basically mess those two cultures up and if any white people get left behind well to bad for them they should of knowed better.
This test forces the people who didn't pass to be more discouraged and to be more streesed about it when students shouldn't be streesing because of one stupid test, thats like saying you passed every class with a 4.0 gpa but just because you didn't pass this one test your not graduating.

You didn't take this test and you graduated with out anyone putting a rode block in your way, in fact this is my only rode block, I was so close to graduating with good grades and had done all my other requirments that all I needed was to pass my english exam and I would of graduated with one hundred comunity service hours, three hundred credits, and with a 4.0 gpa, if I would of passed that exam, but now even do I have all that I can't go to the collage that I want and I wont be walking the line because of your test, you wanna take that into your concions, I hope you can't rest while you work and I hope you can't sleep at night when you start having nightmares about all the students who didn't pass this test I can go on with a lot of reasons why this system dosen't work but hey someday someone will put an end to this and education will go back the way it once was.

U know what this test is so dumb that taking the test is like playing a video game. but a dumb one too. like u need to score the passing requirement points to pass it and like if u dont then too bad try again GAME OVER and keep on repeating. So Fuck you! and your lamest Shit ever CAHSEE. what if u were like us you'll probably be "OMG I cant pass this Stupid ass test all because this one guy made the damn law" so i hope ur law gets trashed away for ever it will awsome if u were to let us pass all of our high school classes with a 3.0 or higher it will be better and its gonna make everyone happy. trust me if u do that we will be fine.

i don't think that people should take the california high school exit exam they should do it based on grades to see who did a good job in all of there classes and the people who don't do a good job then they would be the ones that would have to take it.

i just came here for 2 years. i did not take regular englsih like others.i took ESL for 2 years since i came here.Last year, i had to take the CASHEE and of couse that i fail. i feel so stupid that my friends just copy and they pass. they said that i was stupid coz i didnt copy. it isnt fair coz i spend my time to prepare for it but i didnt pass. i just took it today again and hope that i'll pass it

I question this and the context in which it was said. Why the heck shouldn't smart kids be rewarded. As a smart student myself, I fail to recieve any rewards. (I'm a Texan) and think that yes smart students should be rewarded! And this exit level exam is a GREAT plan.

How do teachers test you over what they have taught you? They test you to make sure you understand enough of the knowledge. Why should this concept not be applied to the enirety of a student's high school career?

And it's not as if they get one chance to pass and are then denied graduation FOREVER. They recieve NUMEROUS chances to take, retake, and take again the exit level exam.

And as far as this being the teachers' faults, I almost completely disagree. I can understand if a teacher who is underpaid and given too many students cannot get to every student personally to make sure they understand the curriculum, but that student should know they do not fully comprehend and go home and study. A child's education is their responsibility and their's alone. The teachers should not be held responisible if a student plainly and simply won't apply themselves or actually try and learn outside of school and study.

As for those students who do not pass, I fell no pity for them. They will get another chance, and if they didn't pass then they obviously do not comprehend enough of the high school curriculum and do not deserve to graduate.

I'm really worried about the high school exit exam. I have a child with a SLD (Specific Learning Disability). He is only in 5th grade, but already is experiencing a tremendous amount of difficulty in Math. I am wondering if this test will apply to him, I assume it does. If so It seems very unfair to push a child all the way through the California school system and then at the very last minute yank the carpet out from underneath him to tell him that he has to pass a test or he doesn't get a diploma. For the "general" student this doesn't sound like a bad thing, but for the student who has an SLD....well this just seems unfair.

This test is so ignorant you dont want to pay the teachers anything but you expect them to teach the students. Its unfair a student can pass all their classes but can't walk the stage because they can't pass a test some people dont take test well because they feel pressured and can't pass it, there will be a raise in high school drop outs because its very disappointing to know you can work so hard and be told you can't walk the stage. Its stupid and selfish I feel so sorry for the next generations. This world is cruel enough now you snatch the most important thing to a high school student
